EDMOND, Okla. – No. 8 Hawai'i Pacific University's magic run in the 2020 ITA Division II National Indoor Team Championship ended in the title match as defending NCAA Champion and top-ranked Barry (Fla.) defeated HPU 4-0 at the Oak Tree Country Club Tennis Center.
The Sharks (7-3) lost to a Division II team for the first time this season. The Buccaneers (9-0) ran their win streak to nine straight.
The Bucs won the doubles point winning at No. 2 and No. 3. Julie Razafindranaly and Eleonore Barrere beat HPU's Sara Ikioka and
Nicole Ballach 6-2 at No. 2, while Jil Engelmann/Qianxin Kong handed
Jayme Waites and
Elodie Busson a 6-3 loss at No. 3 to win the point. HPU's
Marleen Tilgner and
Mihoki Miyahara held a 4-3 lead at No. 1 against Xiyao Wang and Daniela Farfan when the point was taken.
The Bucs picked up three singles wins to take the inaugural indoor team title. At No. 1, fifth ranked Englemann downed the Sharks Busson 6-2, 6-1, while 47th ranked Farfan beat Ikioka 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 and Patricia Lopez won at No. 6 against Waites 6-0, 6-1.
Barry was up a set in the three unfinished positions. HPU's Tilgner had a 2-1 lead in the second set at No. 2 after falling to Wang 6-3 in the first. At No. 3, 41st ranked Razafindranaly was up on Miyahara 6-3, 3-0, and at No. 5 BU's Marriia Skyba led Ballach 6-2, 3-1 when play was called.
The Sharks will remain on the mainland and travel to Florida for three matches this week. HPU takes on Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
