HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University allowed late big innings in both games of Saturday's PacWest Conference doubleheader against Hawai'i Hilo that lifted UHH to sweeping both contests 12-7 and 7-5 at Les Murakami Stadium.
The Sharks (2-11, 2-7) allowed the Vulcans (7-5, 7-2) nine runs in the last three innings in the 12-7 loss, and six runs in the last three innings of the 7-5 loss.
HPU held a 6-3 lead in the first game, before allowing four runs in the seventh and re-tying the game in the eighth. But a five run ninth inning spelled doom for the Sharks.
The offensive star of the day was freshman first baseman
Noah Blythe of Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon, who was 6-for-9 in the twinbill, with a triple and two doubles and three RBIs. Junior centerfielder
Diego Harris was 4-for-9, including a 3-for-4 performance in the second contest with a solo home run.
Freshman righty
Daniel Cortez of Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Ranch (0-3) picked up the loss in relief for the Sharks in the first game, while UH Hilo's Brandyn Lee-Lehano (1-0) got the win in relief.
Senior righthander
Nico Gomez of Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's HS (1-1) as the game two starter, with UHH's Christian DeJesus (1-1) chalking up the win and John Kea his second save of the year.
The Sharks and Vulcans wrap up their long-weekend series on Sunday at Les Murakami Stadium on the UH Manoa campus. First pitch for the nine inning first game is slated for 11 a.m., with the five inning second game about 2 p.m. or 30 minutes after the first contest.
