LA MIRADA, Calif. – The No. 7 Hawai'i Pacific University women hit the mainland for the first time this season and took out Biola 4-0 on Thursday afternoon at the Biola Tennis Center.
The No. 7 Sharks (4-1) started a three-match California swing before heading to Arizona for the PacWest Conference Championships next week. The Eagles (12-5), who received votes in the last Oracle/ITA Division II rankings, lost to a nationally ranked team for the fourth time this season.
The Sharks took the doubles point, nearly sweeping all three positions.
Nicole Ballach and
Marta Ruszczynska blanked Gaby Carvajal and Ines Diaz at No. 3 6-0 before the Sharks top duo of
Marleen Tilgner and
Mihoki Miyahara won 6-3 at No. 1 over 18th ranked Colbeyshae Emery and Mary Brascia. The No. 2 pair that went unfinished had
Elodie Busson and Valentina Mokorova up 5-3 over Brooke Fager and Lilly McNeill when pulled.
HPU took the top two spots in singles, with No. 16 Tilgner beating No. 14 Emery 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 position, while 20th ranked Busson won at No. 2 against Carvajal 6-2, 6-1. The Sharks clinched the match at the No. 5 position when Ruszczynska edged Brascia in a three-set affair 6-3, 0-6, 7-5.
HPU was up or tied at the other singles spots when the match was called. Miyahara led at No. 3 against Fager 4-6, 6-0, 3-1, with Vokorova knotted at No. 4 with McNeill 4-6, 6-2, 5-5 and Ballach tied at No. 6 with Diaz 4-6, 6-1, 1-1.
The Sharks visit San Diego on Friday to face Point Loma. First serve is slated for noon HST (3 p.m. PDT).
