Sharks Double Dipped by Vulcans On Saturday

HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University dropped both ends of a PacWest Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Hawai'i Hilo, 6-3 in game one and 2-1 in an extra inning in the night cap at George & Marion Hall Stadium.

The Sharks (2-15, 2-11) broke up a no-hitter in the extra-inning top of the eighth in the second game on as senior third baseman Joe Gallagher of Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo belted a solo homerun to left center to score the contest's first run. But the Vulcans (11-5, 11-2) answered in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of runs aided by HPU errors for the 2-1 win.

HPU senior starting righthander Nico Gomez of Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's HS, didn't get the decision, pitching into the eighth allowing just two hits and a walk with five strikeouts and an unearned run. Senior righthanded reliever Grant Dragmire of Elk Grove, Calif./Bradshaw Christian (0-2) suffered the loss allowing three hits and a walk while facing four batters.

UH Hilo's Christian Sadler (3-0) lost his no-hit bid with Gallagher's dinger in the extra frame, but that was the only hit and run he allowed. He walked just two and struck out five in the complete game win.

In the opening game of the day, the Sharks built a 3-0 lead early, only to have the Vulcans come back with five runs in the fourth and fifth innings on the way to the 6-3 victory.

Junior rightfielder D.J. Stephens of Nanakuli, Hawai'i/St. Louis School went 2-for-2 in the game with a run scored, while freshman first baseman Noah Blythe of Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Sharks collected plated two runs in the third on a dropped fly ball, then added another on an RBI single by Stephens in the fourth.

Junior starting righthander Brandon Peterson of Stockton, Calif./Excel Academy went through four innings, but had a rocky start to the fifth. Leading 3-2 in the fifth, Peterson (1-3) hit the leadoff batter and walked the next before being lifted for reliever freshman Gavin Pringle of Duncan, British Columbia Canada/Cowichan Secondary. But two wild pitches and an RBI single later tagged two more runs against Peterson who got the loss.

Peterson allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits and walked two with four strikeouts. Pringle gave up a run on a hit with two strikeouts in 0.2 innings, while freshman Daniel Cortez of Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Ranch went 1.1 innings allowing a hit and a strikeout. Freshman Makana Quia of Waipahu, Hawai'i/Waipahu worked a third of an inning allowing a hit, a run and a walk, while redshirt freshman Eddie Lee of Honolulu/Kaiser allowed just one hit in 1.2 innings worked.

But it was Ty Honda, making his first appearance for UH Hilo, who picked up his first win, working two innings allowing a hit and a walk with two strikeouts. Brandyn Lee-Lehano notched his second save of the season working the final three innings allowing one hit with six strike outs.
