AZUSA, Calif. – The 10th ranked Hawai'i Pacific University men fell in their final match on a Southern California swing as No. 7 Azusa Pacific logged a 4-1 victory on Saturday at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex.
The Sharks (3-3) picked up one singles victory in the match, while the Cougars (15-3) won their 11th straight match.
HPU collected it's only point at No. 5 singles, as
Ryohei Arai defeated APU's Caden Samkutty 6-4, 6-3.
The Cougars won the doubles point as sixth ranked Jakob Schnaitter and Leyton Bohren made quick work at No. 1 against
Benjamin Loccisano and
Marcel Hornung 6-1, then Sam Sippel and Ryan Nuno beat HPU's
Felix Einig and
Cheng-Chieh Wang 6-4. At No. 3,
Kilian Maitre and Arai were down 6-5 to Ethan Smith and Dylan Parsley when the point was finished.
In singles, APU's fourth ranked Schnaitter won at No. 1 against Loccisano 6-1, 6-2, with Bohren claiming No. 4 against Hornung 6-4, 6-3. Arai pulled the Sharks to 3-1 with his win, but the match was decided at No. 6 when Cole Rassner downed Wang 6-1, 6-4.
In the two unfinished singles flights, ninth ranked Sippel was leading Einig 6-3, 6-6 when called. HPU's Maitre split sets with Nuno at No. 3, 1-6, 6-4, but trailed 3-1 in the third when the match ended.
After three straight days of matches, the Sharks leave Southern California and head to Surprise, Ariz., for the PacWest Conference Championships that begin next Thursday. The tourney continues through Saturday at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
