AZUSA, Calif. – Seventh ranked Hawai'i Pacific University did not win a point on Saturday as No. 9 Azusa Pacific blanked HPU 4-0 in women's tennis action at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.
The No. 7 Sharks (5-2) were held without a match point by the No. 9 Cougars (12-2) for the first time this season.
APU grabbed the doubles point with wins in the top two positions. Tenth ranked Petra Ivankovic and Anna Savchenko downed HPU's top duo of
Marleen Tilgner and
Mihoki Miyahara 6-3, while at No. 2 Carolyn Brooner and Jacky Wagner beat the Sharks
Elodie Busson and Valentina Mokorova 6-2. No. 3 went unfinished with APU's Courtney Page and Madison Kane up on HPU's
Marta Ruszczynska and
Nicole Ballach 5-4.
The Cougars clinched the match with the middle flights. At No. 5 Kane defeated Ruszczynska 7-5, 6-1, with Wagner taking No. 3 over Miyahara 7-5, 6-0, and Brooner winning at No. 4 against Mokorova 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).
The top two positions went unfinished as sixth ranked Ivankovic of APU held a 6-3, 4-4 lead on 16th ranked Tilgner at No. 1, while 20th ranked Busson split sets at No. 2 with Savchenko 5-7, 6-4, 2-3 when called. Ballach split sets at No. 6 with APU's Katia Betancourt 5-7, 6-2.
The Sharks completed a three-match, three-day swing in Southern California and now head to Surprise, Ariz., for the PacWest Conference Championships that start next Wednesday and continue through Saturday.
