Sharks Sweep Chaminade in Doubleheader

KANEOHE, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University swept cross-town rival Chaminade in a softball doubleheader on Tuesday at Howard Okita Field.
 
The Sharks (2-9, 2-9) won the first game 4-0, then scored three runs in the 10th inning for a 6-5 triumph over the Silverswords (10-10) in the nightcap.
 
Junior pitcher Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista (1-4) hurled a six-hit shutout in the first game for her first win, allowing a walk and picking up two strikeouts.
 
Junior lefthander Megan Wilson (1-2) of Santa Clarita, Calif./West Ranch collected her first win with a complete game, going all 10 innings, allowing five runs, nine earned, on nine hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
 
Shortstop Kanoe Tanigawa of Mililani, Hawai'i/Maryknoll was the offensive star of the first contest, going 2-for-3 with a solo homerun and three RBIs. Sophomore Noel "Tita" Saunders of Pearl City, Hawia'i/Pearl City also was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored as well.
 
In game two, junior catcher Mary Dungey of Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while junior centerfielder Cieana Curran of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell was 2-for-4 with a run scored, and freshman leftfielder Hoku Ching of Honolulu/Roosevelt was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
 
HPU scored a pair of runs in the first and fourth innings of the opening contest.
 
In the first inning, back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom the second and a sacrifice bunt led to a two RBI single by Tanigawa to take the 2-0 lead. Then Tanigawa led off the bottom of the fourth with her homer to left. A single and two walks later, Sanders plated the fourth run of the game with an RBI single to left.
 
Torres allowed only a walk in the next three innings to shut down the Swords. Taylor Genera (5-2) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts in six innings.
 
Game two found Chaminade out to an early lead, with HPU tying the score in the fourth inning on Ching's RBI sacrifice bunt.
 
Game remained tied until the 10th, when the international tie breaker started the teams with a runner on second. The Swords plated two runs on an RBI ground out and an RBI single for 5-2 advantage.
 
In the bottom of the inning, HPU took advantage of a two errors. A fielding error put runners on the corners. An RBI sac bunt, plated freshman Poliahu Aina from Kailua, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama, followed by a throwing error allowed Dungey to score.
 
Madelyn Stockslager (5-7) took the loss for the Swords, going the distance allowing six runs, three earned, on 13 hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
 
The Sharks are back in action on Friday afternoon to start a six-game weekend series with Hawai'i Hilo at Howard Okita Field. The first doubleheader on Friday starts at 1 p.m.
