SURPRISE, Ariz. – The No. 11 Hawai'i Pacific University women took care of business quickly, rolling No. 18 Concordia Irvine 4-0 on Friday in the 2021 PacWest Conference Championships semifinals at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
The Sharks (7-2) took command from the get go against the Eagles (13-4), nearly sweeping doubles and collecting wins low in the lineup in singles.
HPU won at No. 3 with
Marta Ruszczynska and
Nicole Ballach beating Camila Tumosa and Alyssa Zayat 6-2, with the No. 1 pair of
Marleen Tilgner and
Mihoki Miyahara downing Ghazal Pakbaten and Tiffany Carrillo 6-3 to win the point.
Elodie Busson and
Valentina Mokrova were up at No. 2 against Rebekah Anderson and Taylor Lau 5-4 when play was called.
The Sharks started the singles ball rolling with 20th ranked Busson beating 44th ranked Anderson 1-6, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. The Sharks won first set tiebreakers on the way to wins at No. 4 and No. 5. Mokrova beat Heather Richards 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 to win No. 4, with Ruszczynska defeating Carrillo 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 at No. 5 for the victory.
HPU had split sets on two of the unfinished courts, with Miyahara and Tumosa knotted 3-6, 6-1, 2-2 at No. 3 and Ballach with a slight advantage over Lau 6-4, 2-6, 2-0 at No. 6. The No. 1 court had 36th ranked Pakbaten of CUI leading 16th ranked Tilgner 6-3, 6-5 when the match was decided.
The two-time defending PacWest Conference Champion Sharks return to the Championship match for the fourth straight time and 10th time since 2010. HPU meets top-seeded and No. 6 Azusa Pacific in the title match. The Cougars defeated Biola 4-0 in the other semifinal.
The Championship match is slated for 6 a.m. HST (9 a.m. MST) on Saturday at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
