HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University repaid cross-town rival Chaminade for losses on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep on Sunday, winning 3-1 and 4-3 at Sand Island Field.
The Sharks (8-13, 8-13) ended the regular season for the Silverswords (12-12, 12-12) with the sweep, allowing UH Hilo to clinch the PacWest Hawai'i title. HPU and UH Hilo have three makeup games later this week.
HPU never trailed in the 3-1 first game win, but came from behind with a run in the fifth and seventh inning to grab the victory in the nightcap.
Junior righthander
Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista (6-6) hurled her 14th complete game of the season, allowing one run on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Senior lefthander
Megan Wilson (2-7) of Santa Clarita, Calif./West Ranch added another complete game, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout.
Sophomore
Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua was one of the offensive standouts for the Sharks, going 4-for-7 on the day with four runs scored, a double and an RBI. She was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored in the second game. Senior
Cieana Currand of Ewa Beach, Hawai'i/Campbell and sophomore Kanoe, Tanigawa of Mililani, Hawai'i/Maryknoll were both 3-for-6 on the afternoon.
The Sharks scored all three of their game one runs in the first two innings. Freshman
Cherise Horita of Aiea, Hawai'i/Kalani smacked an RBI double, followed by an RBI single by senior catcher
Mary Dungey of Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado to go up 2-0.
In the second inning, sophomore Noel "Tita" Saunders of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City doubled with two out and scored on a pair of errors for the 3-0 advantage.
Chaminade got its only run in the fourth after a leadoff double and single set up Malia Moisa to score on a fielder's choice.
Torres allowed a single in the last two innings, but shutdown the Swords for the 3-1 win.
CUH's Madelyn Stockslager (6-8) took the loss, tossing a complete game allowing three runs, two earned on eight hits with two walks and a strikeout.
The second game saw both teams plate two runs in the first before CUH added a run in the second for a 3-2 advantage.
HPU led off the game with back-to-back singles to set up Dungey for a two RBI double down the right field line for the 2-0 lead.
The Swords answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning after back-to-back singles and a passed ball, CUH tied the contest on a sacrifice fly and a fielding error. Then in the second, the Swords got an RBI single from Stockslager to take the 3-2 lead.
HPU tied the affair in the fifth after a leadoff single by Leong, Tanigawa drove her in on an RBI single making it 2-2.
The Sharks came back for the win in the top of the seventh. Leong lead off with a double, was sacrificed to third and scored on a fielder's choice squeeze bunt by Dungey to go up 4-3.
HPU allowed CUH to put a runner on in the bottom of the seventh on a throwing error to lead off the inning, but Wilson struck out the next batter and got the final two to pop out and fly out to close the game.
Taylor Genera (6-3) suffered the loss for the Swords, allowing four runs on 10 hits with a walk.
HPU now wraps up the season on Thursday and Friday with a three-game makeup series against PacWest Hawai'i champion UH Hilo. Thursday is a single game at 1 p.m., while Friday is a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m., all at the Victor Complex in Hilo.
