No. 9 HPU Beats Biola and No. 17 CUI on Saturday

KAILUA, Hawai'i – The ninth ranked Hawai'i Pacific University men grabbed two wins on Saturday, defeating Biola 4-0 in the morning and No. 17 Concordia (Calif.) 7-0 that evening.
 
The Sharks (3-0) won every match point played in beating the BU Eagles (3-1) and the CUI Eagles (0-2).
 
In the morning match against Biola, the Sharks claimed the doubles point with a shutout at No. 2 as Jakub Beran and Robin Sanz blanked Sebastian Herrera and Carlos Solorzano 6-0, before the No. 1 duo of Jan Pleva and Jordi Walder beating Alexei Prokopchuk and Antonio Varona 6-4. The No. 3 position had HPU's Jan Heine and Benjamin Loccisano up on Callen Hein and Tomas Gomez 5-2 when pulled.
 
In singles, Walder stunned Biola's 10th ranked Herrera 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1, on the way to taking the top three spots. At No. 2, Pleva downed Prokopchuk 6-2, 6-4, and Sanz was victorious at No. 3 against Varona 6-2, 6-2. HPU was up at No. 5 with Loccisano bettering Alex Sedeno 6-4, 4-1, and at No. 6 with Heine over Hein 6-3, 5-3 when the match ended. BU's Gomez had a one-set lead on Beran 7-5, 0-1 when called.
 
In the evening HPU swept the Concordia Eagles across the board.
 
In doubles, the Sharks won at No. 3 with Loccisano/Heine beat Adam Large/Adrian D'auost 6-1, and at No. 2 with Sanz/Beran taking a 6-3 triumph against Jan Simon/Younes Kodiji 6-3. HPU's top duo of Walder/Pleva was leading CUI's Leon Czarnikau/Mike Jansen 5-3 when the point was scored.
 
The singles had two positions go to the super tiebreaker, with the other four going in straight sets to the Sharks. No. 1 had Walder dropping Czarnikau 6-0, 6-2, No. 2 featured Pleva over Simon 6-0, 6-3, No. 3 had Sanz over Large 6-3, 6-1, and No. 6 Ryohei Arai beat D'auost 6-4, 6-1.
 
At No. 4, Loccisano lost the first set to Jansen 6-4, but came back to win the second set 6-3 and the super breaker 10-4. At the fifth position, Heine lost to Kodiji 6-7 in the opening set, then won 6-2 in the second and outlasted Kodiji in the breaker 10-8.
 
The Sharks finish play in the Hawai'i Invitational on Monday when they host No. 4 Hawai'i Hilo at 11 a.m. at the Kailua Racquet Club.
