WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University concluded a five-game series against Saint Martin's on a sour note, as Saint Martin's swept Sunday afternoon's doubleheader 8-4 and 5-2 at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (6-3) left 11 runners on base in both games, while the Saints (5-8) overcame a pethora of errors to pull out the two wins.
HPU was paced offensively by junior Richard Higa of Honolulu/University Lab who was 3-for-9 with an RBI, and freshman T.J. Smith of Sacramento, Calif./Laguna Creek was 2-for-7 with a double and a run scored.
The Sharks allowed runs late in both games that broke open tight contests.
Both decisions went to the HPU bullpen, with righthanded sophomore Edward Lee of Honolulu/Kalani (0-1) charged with the loss in the opener after allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits with a walk and a strikeout in 2.1 innings. Starting junior righty Erik Peterson got no decision after 5.0 innings allowing three runs on nine hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Righthanded senior outfielder D.J. Stephens of Nanakuli, Hawai'i/Saint Louis wrapped up the game with two strikeouts and two walks in 1.2 innings.
The second game saw sophomore righty Makana Quia of Waipahu, Hawai'i/Waipahu (0-1) take the loss, giving up the go ahead run in the fifth inning to the Saints. It was the only run he allowed on just one hit in three full innings as he struck out five. Sophomore starting righty Max Beaulieu of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga also went three innings in the first game, giving up two runs on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Senior outfielder Diego Harris of Los Angeles/Crespi gave up two runs on a hit with two hit batsmen in two-thirds of an inning, and freshman Izaiah Ayala of Diamond Bar, Calif./Bishop Amat struck out the only batter he faced.
The Sharks started from behind in the first game, allowing three first inning runs before Peterson settled down. The Sharks chipped back with runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings, thanks to an RBI single to senior Braxton Wehrle of Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman, an unearned run on a throwing error and an RBI single by sophomore Giancarlo Cortez of San Diego/St. Augustine to tie the game.
But in the top of the sixth, HPU gave up two runs when sophomore left fielder Cole Kashimoto of Kaneohe, Hawai'i/Saint Louis was runover by centerfielder Harris creating an error that allowed the two unearned go ahead runs to score. Kashimoto later in the inning threw out a runner at the plate from left field to keep it to 5-3.
HPU made it 5-4 on an RBI double by Smith in the sixth, but the Saints got three more in the eighth to seal the contest.
Ryan Ancheta (1-0) got the win in relief for Saint Martins.
The second game was a nail-biter with HPU matching Saint Martin's runs in the third and fourth innings with an RBI single from Higa and an error allowing redshirt junior Nicholas Jio of San Diego/Scripps Ranch score to tie the game at 2-2. In the fifth, a wild pitch by Quia on a strikeout allowed the go ahead run to score for the Saints. SMU added two more runs in the top of the seventh for insurance in the 5-2 victory.
Saints reliever Ryan Driscoll (1-0) got the win as Zach Alcos recorded his first save of the season. In all, the Saints allowed HPU five hits with eight strikeouts in game two.
