WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University won the PacWest Conference game, but split the doubleheader with Hawai'i Hilo on Friday at Hans L'Orange Park.
The Sharks (8-4, 2-0) won the first game 8-0, but lost to the Vulcans (10-4, 0-2) in the seven inning non-conference game 7-4.
The Sharks were paced offensively in the first game by redshirt sophomore
Nicholas Jio of San Diego/Scripps Ranch who went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while freshman T.J. Smith of Sacramento, Calif./Laguna Creek went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. Senior
Braxton Wehrle of Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman led the Sharks at the plate in the second game going 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Senior
Diego Harris of Los Angeles/Crespi had one hit, but it was a 3-run inside the park home run.
Sophomore righthander
Edward Lee of Honolulu/Kalani (1-1) picked up the win in relief in the first game, throwing the last four innings of shutout ball allowing two hits with a strikeout. Starting graduate righty
Blake Harrison went 3.2 innings with four hits and a walk, while striking out three. Junior righty
Erik Peterson of San Jose, Calif./King's Academy allowed two hits with two walks in one-and-a third innings.
In game two, junior righthander
Cole Mayeshiro of Mililani, Hawai'i/Mililani struck out three while allowing three runs on three hits with a walk in 3.1 innings. Righthanded reliever Zach McHone of Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty Hills allowed a run on three hits in one third of an inning. Sophomore righty
Daniel Cortez of Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Ranch (0-1) suffered the loss allowing three unearned runs on a hit and two walks with a strikeout in two innings. Freshman righty
Izaiah Ayala of Diamond Bar, Calif./Bishop Amat pitched 1.1 innings of no-run, no-hit ball with a walk and a strikeout.
The Sharks and Vulcans went three innings in the first game without a score before HPU added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The Sharks got an RBI singles from Jio in the fourth and sixth, and Smith's shot to left center – his second homer of the season.
Leading 3-0 in the seventh, HPU exploded with five runs to put the game away. The Sharks loaded the bases then scored on a bases loaded walk, a passed ball, a sacrifice fly, a bases-loaded hit batsman and an RBI ground out to go up 8-0.
Lee, who entered in the in the UH Hilo sixth, fought through a jam in the sixth and ninth to secure the win.
The second game was decided by big innings. The Vulcans got a sacrifice fly in the first to take a 1-0 advantage that held until the Sharks fourth.
After HPU got a leadoff single in the fourth, Wehrle laced a two-out rocket into right field that was just out of the reach of a diving Vulcan outfielder Chris Aubort and into the corner for a triple for one run. Then after a walk, Harris sent a slicing shot down the right field line that skipped into the corner. Harris scooted around the bases and slid home just ahead of a swipe tag for a 3-run inside the park homer. It was the second home run of the season for Harris and gave the Sharks a 4-1 lead.
The lead didn't last long as the Vulcans responded with three runs on a sac fly and a two RBI double to tie the game.
UH Hilo broke the tie in the sixth. After two outs, a walk and a fielding error allowed the go-ahead run to score and an RBI double plated two more unearned runs to put the Vulcans up 7-4. The Sharks left two on in the bottom of the sixth without scoring, then the Vulcans turned to closer John Kea to get his third save of the year by striking out the side.
UH Hilo's Christian DeJesus (1-0) got his first win allowing four runs on seven hits, four walks and six strikeouts in six innings.
The Sharks and Vulcans wrap-up their five-game series with a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, with the first game starting at 10 a.m. at Hans L'Orange Park.
