HONOLULU – The No. 7 Hawai'i Pacific University women suffered their first loss of the season on Friday morning, falling to Division I Cal State Fullerton 4-1 at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Center.
The Sharks (5-1) collected a point at the top singles position, but the Titans (5-2) collected the remainder of the decided points.
HPU's
Elodie Busson moved up to No. 1 singles and defeated Natalie Duffy 6-2, 6-4 in scoring for the Sharks.
HPU fell in doubles with Duffy and YuSeung Suh beat the Sharks
Marleen Tilgner and
Mihoki Miyahara 6-2 at No. 1, and CSUF's Juliette Daires and Kaytlin Taylor downing
Marta Ruszczynska and
Olivia Kjaer 6-3 at No. 3. No. 2 between HPU's Busson and
Valentina Mokrova and Eira Tobrand and Camila Garcia was unfinished with CSUF up 4-3 when the point was won.
Cal State Fullerton went up 2-0 before singles started as HPU's Kjaer retired from No. 6 singles against Taylor. Miyahara lost at No. 3 to Tobrand 6-0, 6-1 and Mokrova fell at No. 4 to Daires 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the match.
HPU was leading at No. 2 with Tilgner taking a set from Suh 7-5 and down 3-2 in the second. At No. 5, Ruszczynska trailed Mariia Nikitash 7-5, 3-2 when the match was pulled.
The Sharks return to play next Friday when they take on Long Beach State at the UH Tennis Center. Match time is scheduled for 10 a.m.
