IRVINE, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University won one and lost one on Saturday at the Concordia Kickoff Classic at The Great Park.
The Sharks (4-4), came from behind to beat Northwest Nazarene (0-4) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon, but lost to Cal State Monterey Bay (4-0) 3-0 in the nightcap.
Freshman
Neva Poulin of Corona, Calif./Norco led the Sharks offensively, going 3-for-6 on the day, with sophomore
Poliahu Aina of Kailua, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama going 2-for-5 with an RBI in the two games, and junior
Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua was 2-for-6.
Freshman righthander
Taylor Thompson (3-1) of Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle collected her third complete game win of the year. Thompson struck out nine and allowed two walks while giving up a run on four hits to the Nighthawks.
Thompson had allowed two hits through four innings before the top of the fifth, when NNU's Abigail Gagnon smacked a leadoff double that was followed by an RBI double down the right field line by pitcher Charlotte Forniss to put NNU up 1-0. But that was the last hit Thompson allowed.
Meanwhile Forniss had a no-hitter going against HPU through four innings that was broken up by a single from freshman
Jewel Larson of Waipahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City in the fifth. She didn't score, but the Sharks had gotten to Forniss.
In the bottom of the sixth, Leong smashed a two-out double to right center. She then stole third and a throw to third on the attempt was errant and allowed Leong to tie the game. The Nighthawks subbed Gina Skinner in the circle who walked junior Noel Saunders of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City. Skinner's wild pitch moved Saunders to second, and Aina drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single to right. Thompson set down NNU 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh for the 2-1 triumph.
Against CSUMB, senior righty
Malia Torres (1-3) of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista, allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits in six innings with a strike out and two walks.
The Otters got an unearned run on two HPU errors in the first inning. Monterey Bay plated two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two RBI triple to seal the win.
The Sharks got two runners on in the third and fourth innings, but failed to score as CSUMB's Jensen Main struck out nine in the six-hit shutout.
HPU concludes the tournament on Sunday when the Sharks meet Cal State East Bay at The Great Park. First pitch is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. HST (11:15 a.m. PST).
