SAN DIEGO – Hawai'i Pacific University gave No. 4 Point Loma all it wanted on Tuesday, but the national ranked Sea Lions survived both ends of a doubleheader at Carroll B. Land Stadium winning 6-5 in 12 innings and 4-2 in the seven-inning nightcap.
The Sharks (12-13, 6-8) held the lead late in both games against the fourth ranked Sea Lions (20-2, 6-2) before PLNU rallied in both contests.
Offensively, freshman T.J. Smith of Sacramento, Calif./Laguna Creek led the Sharks going 4-for-8 on the day with a home run, a double and three RBIs. Redshirt sophomore
Nicholas Jio of San Diego/Scripps Ranch also went 4-for-8 on the day, with an RBI.
In the first game, HPU got Smith's fourth inning leadoff home run to tie the game at 1-1. Then in the sixth, Smith's RBI double started a four-run outburst that included a two RBI single from sophomore
Haydon Huff of Riverside, Calif./Woodside Christian and an error.
The Sharks carried that 5-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning where PLNU's Jakob Christian connected on a 3-run home run to tie the game. In the 12th, the Sea Lions Scott Anderson banged a one-out, walk-off homer for the win.
Freshman
Izaiah Ayala of Diamond Bar, Calif./Bishop Ayat (0-1) suffered the loss in relief, while PLNU's Jonathan Kozasky (1-0) picked up the win.
In the second game, HPU got single runs in the third and fifth innings from RBI singles from Smith and Jio for a 2-1 lead.
But in the bottom of the fifth, Point Loma used a leadoff triple that led to an RBI single, and RBI double and a pair of sacrifices to score four runs to take a 4-2 lead. HPU only got one base runner after that.
Junior
Cole Mayeshiro of Miliani, Hawai'i/Mililani (0-1) got the loss allowing the four runs on five hits in 2.1 innings. The Sea Lions Jack Gonzales (4-0) threw a complete game for his fourth win, allowing two runs on five hits with six strikeouts.
The Sharks travel up the road to Orange County to take on Concordia Irvine in the first of two doubleheaders on Friday. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. HST (1 p.m. PDT) at Eagles Field.
