Sharks Battle No. 1 Concordia Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University gave freshly minted No. 1 Concordia Irvine all it wanted on Tuesday afternoon, but CUI found a way to stay unbeaten with a 1-0 10 inning win and a 4-1 nightcap victory in PacWest Conference play at Eagles Field.

The Sharks (14-19, 8-12) outhit the No. 1 Eagles (34-0, 22-0) 6-4 in the two games and kept them off the scoreboard in all but two of the 17 innings.

Freshman Taylor Thompson of Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle (8-10) once again snakebitten by a hard-luck loss. The righthander hurled seven no-hit innings against the top team in Division II in the first game, and allowed a lone hit in the eighth. But CUI scored its only run in the 10th when a runner was placed at second to start the inning, then capitalized on a successful sacrifice bunt to move to third and scored on a squeeze to take the win. Thompson, who collected her 16th complete game in 18 starts, walked six with five strikeouts to go with the unearned run in 9.1 innings.

Senior Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista (6-9) had allowed CUI just one hit in five scoreless innings in the second contest, when the Eagles took advantage of a walk and a fielder's choice before allowing an RBI single. Then came a three-run home run from CUI's Missy Nemeth for a 4-0 lead in the sixth. Torres struck out two with three walks in posting her 15th complete game in 17 starts.

The Sharks scored after sophomore Poliahu Aina of Kailua, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama doubled to lead off the seventh, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Kanoe Tanigawa of Mililani, Hawai'i/Maryknoll for HPU's lone run of the day.

Aina went 2-for-3 in game two for a 2-for-6 day. Junior Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua also went 2-for-6 on the afternoon.

The Eagles Katlin Entrup (13-0) got both wins, as she pitched three innings in relief in game one allowing one hit with four strikeouts, then hurled a complete game in the second contest allowing a run on three hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. CUI first game starter Erika Morris went seven innings without a decision, scattering two hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

HPU and CUI meet again on Wednesday for a doubleheader that was postponed by inclement weather on Monday. First pitch is slated for 10 a.m. HST (1 p.m. PDT) at Eagles Field.
