Sharks drop Twinbill to Holy Names

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University dropped both ends of a PacWest Conference doubleheader, as Holy Names won 10-2 in the first game and 8-3 in the nightcap at Hans L'Orange Park.
 
The Sharks (8-7, 2-2) lost for the first time in PacWest Conference play, while the Hawks (11-8, 4-2) won their fourth straight.
 
HPU was led offensively in the first game senior D.J. Stephens of Nanakuli, Hawai'i/Saint Louis who went 3-for-4 with a run scored. In the nightcap, junior Elijah Maris of Atlanta, Ga./Bloomington (Ind.) University went 3-for-5 with a run scored.
 
Opening game starter Blake Harrison of Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley (1-1) suffered his first loss of the year, allowing six runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
 
Second game starter Erik Peterson of San Jose, Calif./King's Academy (1-1) also took his first loss of the year. Peterson allowed four runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts in two innings.
 
Holy Names scored three runs in both the first and second innings in the first game, then two more in each of the fourth and seventh innings.
 
HPU scored once in the third and sixth innings in the 10-2 loss.
 
The second game was tighter, but the Hawks plated one run in the first and three in the second to take a 4-0 lead. HPU countered with a run by Maris after a triple and an RBI groundout from sophomore Douglas Zolezzi of Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead. Then the Sharks scored twice in the bottom of the third after loading the bases. Redshirt sophomore Nicholas Jio of San Diego, Caif./Scripps Ranch and junior Richard Higa of Honolulu/University Lab got RBIs after being hit by the pitcher to pull within a run at 4-3. But Ryu Umeda to get a strikeout and a ground out to end the threat.
 
Umeda shutdown HPU for 5.1 innings on the way to his first win of the year, allowing three hits with two walks and chalking up six strikeouts. The Hawks also added single runs in the fourth and sixth before talling two more runs in the eighth to ice the win.
 
The Sharks and Hawks play another doubleheader on Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park, starting at 2 p.m.
