KAILUA, Hawai'i – No. 7 Hawai'i Pacific University shut out Division III power California Lutheran 7-0 on Sunday afternoon, but it wasn't easy.
The Sharks (12-5), ranked seventh in the ITA Division II rankings, needed to go deep against the Regals (9-6) who are ranked 11th in the ITA Division III rankings in order to get the sweep.
The Sharks took the doubles point with a win at No. 2 as
Valentina Mokrova and
Marta Ruszczynska downing Luisa Garcia and Carolina Groff 6-1 before
Elodie Busson and
Mihoki Miyahara won at No. 1 doubles against D3's 13th ranked pair of Mari Carmen Bufkin and Brennan Foreman 6-3. The unfinished No. 3 position between HPU's
Olivia Kjaer and
Rikona Murakami were tied with CLU's Heidi Levanen and Joslin Seaberg when pulled.
HPU swept the singles spots with Busson leading the way at No. 2 over Foreman 6-3, 6-0, followed by Kjaer at No. 6 winning against Lauren Sebastian 6-2, 6-2 and Murakami taking No. 5 against Groff 6-1, 6-3 to clinch the match. Mokrova added No. 4 to the list beating Sophia Gawrit 6-4, 6-2.
The last two matches on the court were the battles. In the feature match at the No. 1 position, HPU's 11th ranked
Shaline Pipa defeated CLU's D3 15th ranked Bufkin 6-4, 7-6 winning 7-5 in the tiebreaker. The No. 4 spot played tiebreakers all the way through. Ruszczynska beat Garcia 7-6 (9-7) in set one, before Garcia responded with a 7-6 (7-5) win in the second set. With the team match already decided, the two played a 10-point super tiebreaker for the third set, which Ruszczynska claimed 10-7 for the Sharks sweep.
The Sharks closed their home regular season with the victory, and now hits the road for matches in Florida before going to Arizona for the PacWest Conference Tournament. HPU faces No. 2 Nova Southeastern at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., on Friday. The match is set for 7 a.m. HST (1 p.m. EDT).
