HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University pushed the suspended game from Saturday into extra innings before Hawai'i Hilo scored in the bottom of the 10th to win 7-6. Then UHH used an eight-run inning in the seventh to take an 8-4 non-conference victory in Sunday's regularly scheduled game at Wong Stadium.
The scheduled second game between the Sharks (17-19, 11-13) and the Vulcans (25-13, 13-11) was canceled due to a travel curfew.
The teams were delayed an hour to restart Saturday's suspended game because of morning rain.
Trailing 6-4 in the top of the seven (in a seven-inning game), the Sharks got a leadoff single before freshman T.J. Stephens of Sacramento, Calif./Laguna Creek greeted UH Hilo closer John Kea with a two-run homer to left field to tie the score.
The Sharks kept the Vulcans off the board defensively, and had an opportunity in the eighth after redshirt sophomore
Nicholas Jio of San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch ripped a triple down the right field line. But the Sharks stranded him.
In the 10th inning, senior reliever
D.J. Stephens of Nanakuli, Hawai'i/Saint Louis School, who restarted the game in the bottom of the sixth, tired allowing a double to Casey Yamauchi. Yamauchi was sacrificed bunted to third, and Stephens was lifted for sophomore reliever
Daniel Cortez of Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Ranch. After intentional walks to load the bases by HPU, Cortez hit Ryan Cho to force in the winning run as UHH took the 7-6 win. Stephens suffered his first loss of the season, despite four strikeouts in 4.1 innings allowing two hits. Kea got the win to go 6-1.
HPU built a 4-0 lead through five innings in the non-conference affair, but trouble came in the bottom of the seventh as sophomore starter
Jack O'Brien of San Diego, Calif./Westview tired, allowing a single and hitting a batter. Sophomore reliever
Mac Leisher of Honolulu/Saint Louis School walked a batter to load the bases and gave up an RBI single. Senior
Cole Mayeshiro of Mililani, Hawai'i/Mililani took over on the mound and allowed a walk to make it 4-2, then gave up a two-RBI single to tie the game. The Sharks subbed on the mound again, bringing in sophomore
Makana Quia of Waipahu, Hawai'i/Waipahu was met by Jaren Kanbara with a three-run homer to take the lead. UHH scored again to complete the eight run inning and didn't allow the Sharks to plate another run.
O'Brien went 6.1 innings allowing two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks, but got no decision. Mayeshiro (0-2) was charged with the loss. UHH's Jacob Liberta (3-0) picked up the win in relief for the Vulcans.
HPU has some time off before heading to California to wrap up the regular season starting with a doubleheader at Azusa Pacific on Friday, April 22nd. The twinbill starts at 11 a.m. HST (2 p.m. PDT) at Cougar Field.
