KANEOHE, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University took both ends of a PacWest Conference doubleheader with cross-town rival Chaminade, winning 2-1 and 2-0 at HPU's Howard Okita Field.
The Sharks (17-25, 10-14) squeezed out the last minute 2-1 win against the Silverswords (12-21, 8-16) in game one while scoring twice in the third inning of game two and fending off the Swords for the remainder of the game for a shutout.
HPU saw incredible pitching from both of their pitchers today with freshman
Taylor Thompson of Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle pitching the first seven innings allowing a single earned run on just three hits while Malie Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista gave up just two hits with three strikeouts in her shutout for game two.
It was a slow start for the Sharks in game one with Chaminade taking an early 1-0 lead in the third inning on two illegal pitches leading two back-to-back walks followed by a base hit and a wild pitch to score the run.
They were able to retaliate in the sixth with Tita Saunders of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City singling up the middle and advancing all the way to third on a botched fielding attempted by Chaminade's centerfielder. She scored on a sacrifice fly by
Hoku Ching of Honolulu, Hawai'i/Roosevelt to tie the game at one all.
The Sharks closed out the game in the bottom of the seventh as
Poliahu Aina of Kailua, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama reaching on a fielder's choice and advancing to third on a single by catcher Savannah Salyer-Kovacks of Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo. Aina scored on a high chopped ball fielder's choice from
Tiari Hernandez of Waipahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City for the 2-1 victory.
Chaminade's Jaeda Cabunac pitched for 6.1 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with a strikeout in taking the loss. She moves to 7-12 on the season.
Game two was similar but it was the Sharks who rallied in the third frame with Saunders tallying an RBI double to centerfield scoring the runner at second base for an early 1-0 start. A single from
Kanoe Tanigawa of Mililani, Hawai'i/Maryknoll scored Saunders and solidified the 2-0 final score.
Through strong pitching and near perfect defense on both sides, the games ended in just one and a half hours each with Torres closing the game in just 72 pitches. Her win advances the record to 8-12 on the season.
CUH's Taylor Genera went 6.0 innings allowing two earned runs on five hits with a walk. She moves to 5-7 with the loss in game two.
The Sharks will close out their home season with a final four game series against Academy of Art on Friday and Saturday. The first pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Friday at Howard Okita Field.
