ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The No. 7 Hawai'i Pacific University men made it a clean sweep of their visit to Florida, beating No. 8 West Florida 4-2 on Sunday at Sanlando Park.
The seventh ranked Sharks (14-1) picked up their fourth straight win and third straight against top eight competition with the triumph over the eighth ranked Argos (17-6). Both teams closed regular season play with the match.
The Sharks took the doubles point with wins in the second and third spots. HPU's 47th ranked duo of
Jakub Beran and
Robin Sanz beat Salvador Bandeira and Lluis Miralles Miro 6-3 at No. 2, followed by
Jan Heine and
Benjamin Loccisano winning at No. 3 over Bernardo Costa and Pedro Cordeiro 6-4 for the point. The No. 1 pairs featuring 16th ranked
Jan Pleva and
Jordi Walder led UWF's 37th ranked Facundo Bermejo and Tomas Descarrega 5-4 when the point was settled.
The singles competition would prove much closer.
The Argos tied the match at 1-1 when 21st ranked Bermejo won at No. 2 against Pleva 6-2, 6-1. But the Sharks answered back as second ranked Walder took out Juan Cabrera 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 1 for the 2-1 lead.
The Sharks won at No. 5 with Loccisano downing Cordeiro 7-6, 6-1, with UWF coming back at No. 6 as Miro won in three sets over Heine 6-3, 0-6, 6-3. The match finished at No. 4 with Beran keeping his singles record perfect with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Bandeira for the match winner.
The unfinished No. 3 spot was a doozy, with 61st ranked Sanz going back and forth with Costa 5-7, 6-2 and Costa up 4-3 when the match was ended.
It's Surprise time now for the Sharks, as in Surprise, Arizona. That's the site of the 2022 PacWest Conference Championships at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex. The men's tournament starts on Thursday, with the seeding and pairings announced on Monday by the PacWest office.
