ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The No. 8 Hawai'i Pacific University women shutout No. 27 West Florida 4-0 to close their Florida road trip on Sunday at Sanlando Park.
The eighth ranked Sharks (13-7) won early and often against the No. 27 Argos (13-10) before heading west.
HPU took the top two doubles spots in winning the point, as
Elodie Busson and
Mihoki Miyahara blanked Karolina Silwanowicz and Mayumi Saguchi 6-0 at No. 2 before 30th ranked
Shaline Pipa and
Marleen Tilgner won at No. 1 against Sara Yigin and Giuliana Sacco 6-1. The unfinished No. 3 duos had
Valentina Mokrova and
Marta Ruszczynska leading UWF's Irene Recuenco and Raissa Wagner 4-3 when halted.
The Sharks grabbed three fairly quick wins in the singles, started by Mokrova at No. 5 as Wagner retired down 6-3, 5-0 for the first singles point. Moments later Ruszczynska won at No. 6 over Zoe Yasan 6-1, 6-3 for the second point. The Sharks wrapped the match up at No. 2 with Busson beating 20th ranked Recuenco 6-3, 7-5 to end the contest.
At No. 1, 13th ranked Pipa and 71st ranked Yigin were tied at 6-6 in the first set, while 18th ranked Tilgner led Saguchi 6-4, 2-1 at No. 3, and Miyahara led Silwanowicz 6-0, 4-4 at No. 4 when the match was pulled.
The Sharks now head west to Surprise, Arizona for the 2022 PacWest Conference Championships. The seeding and pairings will be announced by the conference office on Monday, with the Sharks starting competition on Thursday at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
