SURPRISE, Ariz. – The No. 13 Hawai'i Pacific University women recorded made it back-to-back with shutout wins in taking down No. 48 Fresno Pacific 4-0 in the semifinals of the 2022 PacWest Conference Championships at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
The 13th ranked Sharks (15-7), the tournament's top seed, needed about an hour and 40 minutes to take down the fifth seeded and No. 48 Sunbirds (15-9) and advance into Saturday's championship match.
HPU claimed the doubles point with the No. 3s in first as
Valentina Mokrova and
Marta Ruszczynska defeated Alice Marques and Elise Leik 6-1 before
Elodie Busson and Mikhoki Miyahara beat Alice DiMatteo and Sanne Brull 6-3. The unfinished No. 1 position saw 10th ranked
Shaline Pipa and
Marleen Tilgner trailing Maria Borodii and Lea Falentin 5-3.
The Sharks took a little more than an hour to win three singles points and the win.
HPU's seventh ranked Pipa grabbed a big win against 63rd ranked Borodii 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 for a 2-0 lead. The third and fourth points were nearly simultaneous as Mokrova won at No. 5 against Brull 6-2, 6-3 seconds before 23rd ranked Tilgner finished off DiMatteo 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 for the win.
Miyahara was up at No. 4 against marques 6-3, 2-2 when the match ended, while the other two spots were split. Busson was tied with Falentin 2-6, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 2, and Ruszczynska was tied with Leik 6-2, 3-6, 1-1.
The 13th ranked Sharks now face second seeded and No. 18 Azusa Pacific for the championship on Saturday. APU defeated sixth seeded Academy of Art 4-1 in the semifinals. The championship match is slated for 10 a.m. HST (1 p.m. MST) at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
