Baseball Sweeps Biola in First Weekend of Conference Play

WAIPAHU - The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team notched their first PacWest series in game one of Saturday's doubleheader against Biola at Central Oahu Regional Park.

The Sharks (7-4, 4-0 PacWest) grab their first sweep of the year thanks to outstanding relief pitching in game two and is the only undefeated team of those that opened up conference play this week.

Game One
Biola pounced first with a solo homer from Wyatt Duncan his third in consecutive games for an early 1-0 lead.

With Kota Suzuki leading off the second inning he reached base on an infield single before an error put him in scoring position. Richard Higa found himself in a hitter count and drove a pitch down the right-field line for a double and an RBI. With runners on second and third with nobody out the Eagles managed to get out of the jam with only one run.

Teams threatened but to no avail until the top of the fifth. Multiple balks allowed runners to move into scoring position and the Eagles capitalized with a pair of runs. After multiple pitching changes and runners on second and third the eagles grounded a ball that was fumbled at third base, which advanced runners and scored a fourth run in the inning for a 5-1 lead.

Hawaii battled back in the bottom of the sixth inning with the first three runners reaching base safely. During Higa's at-bat ball four got past the catcher scoring one run from third. Nicholas Jio who has been out the past few games was called on to pinch hit where he drew a walk and another run. The next at-bat had a controversial hit-by-pitch on Cole Kashimoto ended up with him being called back to and drawing the walk anyway bringing the Sharks withing one run and the bases loaded. The Eagles turned a 1-2-3 double play and got a flyout to retain a 5-4 lead.

HPU feeling the momentum kept things going in the bottom of the seventh with two singles and a sac bunt setting up runners in scoring position. After working a 3-0 count Higa was intentionally walked which set up Chase Taylor, who put one in play to the first baseman who attempted to go home with the throw and airmailed it scoring two runs. Adler Pierson up next poked one out to the center fielder for a sac fly and the final run of the inning putting the Sharks back in command 7-5.

Biola threatened in the eighth getting one back, but Dylan Honda struck out the last batter to shut down the offensive attack.

The Sharks added an insurance run in the top of the eighth to lead 8-6 going into the final frame and shut down the Eagles in the ninth for a game-one and series-clinching win.

Game Two
The Eagles got going early again on another solo home run from Wyatt Duncan his fourth in four consecutive. Teammate Sam Lisiak decided to join and went back-to-back jacks with his teammate for a 2-0 lead.

Errors ate up Biola in the series and more came in the first inning as Kota Suzuki reached on an error and batted over to third. During Noah Hata's plate appearance, another self-inflicted error on a passed ball allowed Suzuki to score. Hata then roped a triple to the gap and tied the game 2-2 after one.

The Sharks defensive went three up then three down in the second and kept the momentum going in their at-bats when Jonathan Lucio earned a lead-off walk and stole second. Haydon Huff grounded out to advance the runner and another passed ball put Hawaii up 3-2.

The pitchers settled in and did not allow any runs the rest of the game although teams threatened in multiple innings.

Travis Johnson started game two and went 2.2 innings giving up the only two runs of the game in the first inning. Daniel Cortez then came on 1.1 innings before being replaced by Mac Leisher who went the rest of the way throwing 3.0 innings with six strikeouts and no earned runs.

The Sharks welcome Concordia to town next week for a midweek Wednesday and Thursday series, both doubleheaders are slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. HT.
