Softball Rallies Big to Split Games With Emporia State

KANEOHE - The Hawaii Pacific University softball team rallied back in game two of their doubleheader to split games with Emporia State University on Thursday afternoon at the Howard. A Okita Softball Field.

The Sharks (10-17, 4-7 PacWest) split games in their first-ever meeting with the Hornets (14-10, 0-2 MIAA).

Game One
ESU got on the board in the first inning with a walk and sac bunt to move the runner into scoring position. A pitch down in the dirt initiated a steal from the Hornet runner and a throwing error into left field allowed the run to score for an early 1-0 in the first.

The Sharks eventually got on the board in the sixth with Tiari Hernandez reaching base on a single to center. Noel "Tita" Saunders got on as well later in the inning. Saunder stole halfway to second and drew a throw to the second baseman in front of the bag, with slight confusion on where to go with the ball second baseman tossed it into centerfield and tied the game at 1-1.

With the game headed into extra innings, the Hornets capitalized and scraped across two runs on their first two hits.

The Sharks battled in the bottom of the eighth and used a sac bunt to move the runner over. In the next at-bat, the Hornet's pitcher sailed one high and HPU closed the gap 3-2, but it was enough as they fell in extras.

Game Two
The Hornets jumped out to another early lead in the second inning with a six spot. ESU put together four hits, a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and an error by the defense. They added another run in the second inning and took a 7-0 lead, but the Sharks did get out of the bases-loaded jam to minimize the damage.

The Hornets kept their run-per-inning streak going in the fourth and extended the lead to 8-0. However, the Sharks finally found a groove in the bottom of the fourth with four straight singles that generated three runs from Saunders, Tanigawa, Yoshida, and Larson. Hoku Ching and Emily Wheat reached on HBP and a walk to load the bases. Camille Lohse came up clutch with her first hit of the year and drove in another pair of runners for the fifth run of the inning and no outs. HPU was not done there as Hernandez continued to be the best bat for the Sharks and cleared the bases with a two-RBI double to cut the lead 8-7.

Hawaii kept seeing the ball well into the bottom of the sixth and started with a Hernandez single again. Brandi Leong dropped the sac bunt and set up a Saunders RBI single to center. Saunders then stole second to put runners on second and third where Tanigawa roped a ball to center and scored two runs to take the lead.

Five Sharks had multi-hit days with Yoshida and Larson leading the way with three each. While Lohse, Larson, and Tanigawa each had a pair of RBIs.

Yoshida came on in relief for Thompson after the rocky start she went 5.1 innings picking up a pair of strikeouts and allowed two runs on four hits.

The Sharks hit the road next week to start three PacWest conference series and the Tournament of Champions hosted by Stanislaus State. The first series is set to begin next Tuesday at Dominican.
