Baseball Drops Sunday Rubber Match 13-8 to UH Hilo

WAIPAHU - The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team dropped the rubber match with UH Hilo Sunday afternoon at Central Oahu Regional Park

The Sharks (10-15, 6-9 PacWest) allowed a season-high 23 hits to the Vulcans (17-7, 8-5 PacWest). Another high-scoring game highlighted by long bombs on both sides saw HPU drop the non-conference series and first of three matchups with Hilo.

UHH jumped out to another early first inning from a two-run blast to left field off the bat of Ryan Cho.

The Sharks bounced back in the bottom half with three straight hits to load the bases. With one out catcher Chase Taylor flew out deep to right field for a sac fly and put HPU on the scoreboard.

In the top of two Mason Cook had a runner in scoring position and drove him in for the third run. While Alec Yamauchi launched a solo shot in the third to extend their lead 4-1. Cho added another RBI to his weekend total when he singled home a run in the top of the fourth.

Down 5-1, HPU had a few bounces go their way with multiple errors. Kota Suzuki with ducks on the pond grounded to second base and saw it go through his legs bringing both runners home slashing the lead 5-3 after four.

An eventful fifth inning from both sides had Hilo regain a four-run lead but catcher Chase Taylor responded with a two-run shot over dead center to cut the lead back down to two.

HPU rallied more in the sixth with four straight free passes to first gave them the first run of the inning. Heads-up baserunning from Suzuki scored another run on a passed ball and a Taylor sac fly scored one more putting the Sharks within one.

The Hilo bats refused to quit as they reached the 20-hit mark in the seventh and extended the lead back up to three leading 11-8.

The Vulcans added two more insurance runs and closed it out in the bottom of the ninth for an 13-8 victory.

Taylor tied the season-high four RBI mark done by two other players, while Tejean Smith was the only Shark with a multi-hit game.

The HPU bullpen had seven pitchers throw giving up 13 earned runs and a season-high 23 hits.
