Softball Takes One off of Holy Names

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University softball team continued their road trip by taking on Holy Names University for a PacWest conference series Monday afternoon at Chabot College Softball Field.

The Sharks (16-21, 11-11 PacWest) took game one 7-1, before the Hawks (4-15, 3-7 PacWest) rebounded for a 8-3 victory in game two.

Game One

Hawaii Pacific got in going in the first inning. Brandi Leong and Tita Saunders connected on back-to-back singles. Hailey Yoshida then put the ball in the infield, with Leong beating out the throw to score the first run.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of third, Savanna Salyer-Kovacs slapped a single into center field to extend HPU's run to 3-0.

The Hawks responded a few innings later with a solo shot from Ana Buitron. Tiari Hernandez took that home run as a challenge, leading off the top of the seventh with her own long ball, her second of the year.

The Sharks were not done yet, following Hernandez with four consecutive singles by Leong, Saunders, Tanigawa, and Jewel Larson. Neva Poulin then came in as a pinch hitter and singled in two runs to put Hawaii Pacific comfortably by six runs. HPU held on defensively to take game one 7-1.

Saunders, Yoshida, and Larson led the way in the hitting department, snagging a pair of hits each. Meanwhile, Salyer-Kovacs and Poulin plated four runs together.

Taylor Thompson dominated her way through seven innings. She gave one run and struck out six batters in the process.

Game Two

Unfortunately for Hawaii Pacific, there seems to be something in the air when it comes to their opponents in game two. A hungry Holy Names offense pounced in the third and fourth inning, grabbing eight runs. A huge part of those runs came off the bat of Iris Bejarano, who launched a three-run shot on the first pitch she saw.

The Sharks found their own pressure in the fifth inning. With two runners on base, Tiari Hernandez brought in Savanna Salyer-Kovacs for HPU's first run of the second game. Brandi Leong followed in suit, finding a single to right field to score Alexis Oshiro

Hawaii Pacific scored one more in the seventh off the bat of Leong, but ultimately fell 8-3 against Holy Names.

Leong had herself a game, finding three hits in a two RBI performance. Hernandez also brought in her own runner.

After coming in halfway through the fourth inning, Hailey Yoshida threw a shutout 2.2 innings. She struck out four batters and only gave up two hits.

Up Next

Due to severe weather conditions, the second double-header scheduled for tomorrow, March 28, is still up in the air. If all is well, the Sharks will battle with Holy Names starting around 12:00 p.m. PST at Chabot College Softball Field.
