Softball Beats Azusa in Both Games of Doubleheader on Thursday

KANEOHE - The Hawaii Pacific University softball team swept both games of their doubleheader against Azusa Pacific University on Thursday afternoon at the Howard A. Okita softball field.

The Sharks (7-16, 3-7 PacWest) have picked up three wins in a row now against conference opponents after losing their first seven of the season.

Game One
APU got on the board early in the first inning with the first batter getting plucked on the game's first pitch. After a sac bunt moved the runner over the next three batters reached and scored two runs before an inning-ending double play limited any more damage.

Both teams threatened, but the Sharks struck next in the bottom of the fifth. Alexis Oshiro got the momentum going with a single and was driven all the way around on a Tiari Hernandez double down the right-field line. Hernandez took advantage of a passed ball to advance to third where Brandi Leong hit a hard grounder at the pitcher that scored the run and tied the game 2-2 after five innings.

HPU kept the momentum in the bottom of the sixth with Kanoe Tanigawa leading off the inning with a single. Hailey Yoshida followed up with one of her own and Jewel Larson laid down a sac bunt to get them into scoring position. Hoku Ching stepped into the box and found a pitch she liked and drove it up the middle to score both runs and took the lead 4-2 heading into the seventh.

Gianna Kerschbaum came on in relief of Yoshida and shut down the Cougars the rest of the way. Kerschbaum picked up the last 5.2 innings collecting a strikeout along the way and allowing four hits.

Hernandez swung a hot bat and went 3-for-3 in the first game of the series, with two doubles and an RBI.

Game Two
Both the Sharks and the Cougars remained hitless through three innings before HPU threatened with the bases loaded in the fourth but APU came out unscathed. Runners being left on base made Hawaii Pacific want it, even more, when they found themselves with the bases loaded again in the bottom of the fifth. This time Noel "Tita" Saunders delivered with a lined shot over the left fielder's head and cleared the bases for three runs. Yoshida grabbed another RBI in the inning on a single up the middle and Neva Poulin had a pinch-hit RBI single to right field as the Sharks took a 5-0 lead headed to the sixth.

Taylor Thompson earned her second win in a row holding the Cougars to one run in game two. Thompson allowed one run to go with two strikeouts.

Saunders had the highlight of the day with her bases-clearing three RBI double, while Yoshida picked up a pair of hits and an RBI of her own in game two.

The Sharks and Cougars run it back tomorrow with the first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. HT.
