Baseball Sweeps the Academy of Art with Two Big Conference Wins

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team concluded their California road trip Tuesday afternoon against the Academy of Art University at Laney College Field.

The Sharks (17-22, 12-15 PacWest) completed the 4-game sweep over the Urban Knights (14-24, 7-17 PacWest).

Game One

The offense picked up right where they left off yesterday. In the top of the first, Nicholas Jio drew a walk and stole second. Tejean Smith then slapped a single into right field to put the first run on the board. Not done yet, D.J. Stephens pushed a single through the right side of the infield to score Smith. Finally, a poor throw allowed Stephens to round the bases all the way from first to put Hawaii Pacific up 3-0.

The Academy of Art responded in the third inning. Four solid hits allowed two runners across the plate. A big double-play turned by the HPU defense in the middle of the inning helped to limit the damage.

Wanting to get those runs back, the Sharks offense looked to regain in the fifth. Jio found himself on third with two outs on the board. Richard Higa then drew a walk and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Stephens was the difference maker once again, hitting a single to left field to plate two runs. By the end of the fifth, Hawaii Pacific held a 5-2 lead over the Urban Knights.

After that, the pitching for both sides tightened up. It seemed like neither side was going to put another run on the board, that was until the ninth inning. HPU pitcher Jack O'Brien was looking for the complete game. However, the first two batters of the ninth got on base and occupied the corners.

Yet, O'Brien stayed in the game. He struck out the next ART U player and almost forced a double-play on the next batter. Unfortunately, the Sharks were unable to turn it, allowing a third run to score. But, the very next pitch sealed the victory for Hawaii Pacific, as they took game one 5-3 over the Academy of Art.

Stephens was scary with the bat, finishing with two hits and three RBIs. Kota Suzuki followed behind with two hits, while Smith had one RBI to his name.

O'Brien threw his first complete game of the season. He gave up three earned runs, but struck out a season-high eight batters.

Game Two

Like thieves in the night, Hawaii Pacific's sneaky base running netted them two runs in the first. Kota Suzuki and Nicholas Jio got themselves on base, before executing a double steal to put them in scoring position. Tejean Smith then snuck a single through the left side to bring home Suzuki. Later on with two outs, the two runners who were on the corners, completed another double steal, with Jio stealing home to put HPU up 2-0.

In the second inning, Suzuki singled in Daniel Johnson, while Ian Wolski scored thanks to a fielding error in the third. On the other hand, the Academy of Art started to pick up some steam, scoring three runs in the second and third innings combined. As the third frame came to a close, HPU only led by a single run 4-3.

Hawaii Pacific's bats came back to life in the fifth. Smith and Wolski began the inning by hitting a single each. Once again, the double steal came into effect, and produced the same result as last time. An errant throw by the catcher allowed Smith to steal third and score a run.

The inning did not stop there, five more Sharks would reach base, making it seven straight players to reach base to start the fifth. Travis Johnson and D. Johnson both had big doubles to bring home more runs. At the end of the half inning, HPU scored six runs off of seven hits.

A long ball by ART U player Gabe Henderson in the seventh gave the Urban Knights two more runs, but Hawaii Pacific completed the 4-game sweep with a 10-5 victory.

Jio, Smith, Wolski, D.J. Stephens, D. Johnson, and Richard Higa each had two hits apiece. Meanwhile, T. Johnson and D. Johnson both batted in two RBIs.

Andrew Hauck had the start on the mound for the Sharks. He went five innings, giving up three earned runs and striking out six batters.
