Women's Tennis Reigns Supreme in PacWest, Tilgner Named Most Outstanding Player

SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Hawaii Pacific University Women's Tennis team is once again PacWest Conference Champions with their 4-2 win over Azusa Pacific on Saturday morning at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.

The Sharks got their revenge on the Cougars in a rematch of last year's championship and completed their undefeated conference season. This was HPU's third PacWest title and most among active schools. HPU battled through the doubles competition and was able to secure the advantage heading into singles. With a few quick wins, HPU was able to clinch on court six to bring home the title.

Doubles Competition
For the first time all tournament HPU had to fight back in the doubles competition with Azusa's Christiana Tudo and Vini Bautista taking down Elodie Busson and Abigail Wild 6-2. It was not a worry though as their teammates had their back and on court one Pipa Shaline and Marleen Tilgner cruised to a 6-3 victory. With the decider coming down to the threes, Nicole Ballach and Mihoki Miyahara opened up a 5-0 lead, but Shannele Lopez and April Wong battled back to 5-4. Down 40-0 in the game Miyahara and Ballach rattled off four straight points, took the set and secured the doubles point.

Singles Competition
Tilgner who did not lose a single set in the tournament crushed April Wong 6-2, 6-0 inching the Sharks closer. Pipa took a loss to the No. 11 ranked Eleonora Liga 6-4, 6-0. Busson on court two took matters into her own hands and rallied the team taking down Madison Kane 6-4, 6-3. With the clinching point coming down to the final few courts Miyahara had a huge lead over Katherine Nguyen 6-1 in the first set. She continued to dominate in the second set going up 4-0 before Nguyen would snag three back. Miyahara dug deep and took the final two games and the celebration began.

The PacWest named Marleen Tilgner as the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
