Softball Unable to Overcome Hilo's Stellar Pitching in Double-Header

HILO - The Hawaii Pacific University softball team traveled to the Hilo to take on rival University of Hawaii-Hilo, a rematch of last week's battle, Sunday afternoon at the Vulcan Softball Field.

The Sharks (20-30, 15-15 PacWest) faced off against two incredible pitching performances by the Vulcans (15-24, 10-15 PacWest) pitching staff, dropping both games of the double-header.

Game One

Both pitchers were holding steady to start the game, but it was Hilo that was able to break the scoring seal in the third. Three consecutive batters reached base to begin the inning to put pitcher Taylor Thompson in a sticky situation. However, she was able to get the next three batters out, only surrendering a single run to a sacrifice fly. But, a run in the fourth and the fifth saw the Vulcans extend their lead to 3-0.

Meanwhile for Hawaii Pacific, they had runners in scoring position multiple times throughout the game, but could not muster up a run. Finally in the sixth inning, they found their way onto the scoreboard. Hailey Yoshida got on with a double to center field, Neva Poulin then advanced her to third with a single through the right side. Finally, a walk by Jewel Larson loaded the bases, before a wild pitch allowed all runners to move 60 feet, giving HPU their first run of the game.

Trailing by two going into the final inning, HPU once again had multiple runners on the base path. Unfortunately, they could not capitalize on the opportunity, falling in game one 3-1.

Kanoe Tanigawa and Yoshida led the Sharks with two hits apiece. Yoshida was seeing the ball well, hitting two doubles.

Gianna Kerschbaum came on in relief and pitched a shutout two innings. She gave up one hit and also struck out one batter.

Game Two

An error plagued first inning for the Hawaii Pacific's defense resulted in three unearned runs for Hilo. Then in the third inning, some solid hitting by UHH extended their lead further, going up 8-0.

An outstanding performance in the circle from Vulcans' pitcher Lauren Avalos sealed HPU's fate, as she pitched a no-hitter to close out game two in five innings.
