Sharks Notch First 20-Win Season Since 2019 with Two Wins Over UH Hilo in Doubleheader

WAIPAHU - The Hawaii Pacific University picked up the series, conference and double header victory on Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

The Sharks (20-26, 15-17 PacWest) grabbed their 100th all-time win over the Vulcans (24-19, 13-17 PacWest) their first 20-win season since 2019.

Game One
Hilo jumped out to an early 1-0 lead off of three singles before HPU turned an inning-ending double-play to save any further damage. The Vulcans added another in the second off of good use of small ball to get the runner into scoring position and took a 2-0 lead.

HPU struck back in the bottom of the second and put up four runs. Kota Suzuki and D.J. Stephens went back-to-back singles and set up Richard Higa to drop down the sac bunt. With ducks on the pond, Ian Wolski continued to collect RBIs and drove home both runs. With runners still in scoring position the left-fielder misplayed a line drive that ended up going off his glove and to the wall bringing home another pair of runners for HPU to take a 4-2 lead.

UH Hilo regained the lead after a controversial triple-play was ruled dead and only two outs were awarded. Hilo turned the saved out into an RBI triple and a two-run home run to go up 5-4.

HPU tied things up again in the fourth after Higa doubled down the line. A groundout moved him over and another one from Chase Taylor would score him. The Sharks had another opportunity come in the fifth with Nicholas Jio and Cole Kashimoto reaching base and being moved over by a wild pitch. Hilo elected to intentionally walk Suzuki setting up Stephens who put one through the right side for two RBIs. Taylor followed up with a ball mishandled by the third baseman as he reached base and another run scored. With the bases still loaded a failed pickoff was thrown into center field bringing home two more runs. The Sharks added another on a Noah Hata single that went the other way. HPU completed their seven spot against Hilo with on a dribbler that Jio beat out for an infield single and a 12-5 lead.

Hilo put up three in the top of the sixth on Casey Yamauchi's three-run home run for his third hit of the contest.

HPU bullpen shut down the Vulcans in the seventh to claim game one of the doubleheader and the conference portion of the weekend.

Game Two
More self-inflicted errors carried over to the second game for Hilo as HPU grabbed a first-inning run. Kashimoto reached base and a failed pick-off moved him to third. Suzuki then shot one down the left-field line for a triple.

Higa doubled down the line in the second to kickstart a three-run inning. A routine pop-up to the second baseman turned into a run after he dropped the ball and Taylor made it to second. Taylor stole third and a passed ball scored another run. Lastly, Daniel Johnson was drilled by a pitch and moved up on a wild pitch before being driven in by Jio to extend HPU's lead 4-0.

Hilo loaded the bases in the top of the third and got one across on a sac fly to right field.
The Sharks added to their lead in the fourth on a Higa double and Taylor RBI single, but would only get one run.

Hilo began the sixth with a solo bomb from Joshua Fuentes to left center to cut the lead back down to two, but could not muster anything else after leaving runners on second and third.

HPU added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth with Stephens getting a lead-off single. Higa stroked his second double of the game to put them in scoring position. A wild pitch that lodged in the catcher's gear by rule awarded the base runner home for the first run of the inning. Taylor kept seeing the ball into the barrel and found himself a triple. Taylor later was balked home for another run. Daniel Johnson joined the extra-base hit party with a double and Jio one-upped him with the second triple of the inning and a third run. Lastly, Kashimoto added the final run on a single up the middle and extended the lead to 9-3.

Stephens wanted in on the triple palooza and cashed in a fourth of the game for HPU in the seventh. Higa grounded one to the third baseman who had it bounce off his glove and into left field for an error and run.

The Vulcans added a triple of their own and scored on a sac fly. They attempted to try again on the next at-bat but Suzuki took offense and threw the runner out at home for an inning-ending double play.

The final nail in UH Hilo's coffin came in the eighth when Tejean Smith drove in Nicholas Jio to set up the 11-4 win.

Shea Lake picked up his first win of the season coming on in relief after Koa Dabuet started the first inning of the game.

Six Sharks had multi-hit games, but Jio led the way with three, along with a pair of RBIs. The team collected a season-high four triples.
