Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Falls Twice in Slugfest Against Holy Names

ALAMEDA, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team continued their PacWest conference road trip Wednesday afternoon. They visited Holy Names University for the start of their four game series at the College of Alameda Baseball Field.

The Sharks (10-22, 6-15 PacWest) fell twice to the Hawks (21-12, 11-7 PacWest), as both teams combined for a total of 45 hits over the first double-header.

Game One

The two teams traded runs through the first four innings, with Holy Names being the beneficiary of a 6-3 lead.

As far as scoring goes, three straight singles by Nicholas Jio, Tejean Smith, and D.J. Stephens plated a run in the first inning. Then in the second, a triple down the right field line by Travis Johson scored Smith, who reached base on a walk. Later on in the fourth, a big double by Ian Wolski setup Kota Suzuki to bring in a third run for the Sharks.

Meanwhile, the Hawks continuously jumped on HPU's pitches, adding five more runs over the next three innings to extend their lead to 11-3 heading into the eighth frame.

Hawaii Pacific did close the gap slightly in the ninth inning. Three consecutive walks by the 7-8-9 hitters once again brought Suzuki to the plate. Suzuki brought home Chase Taylor, while Jio plated Wolski to make the final score of game one 11-5 in favor of Holy Names.

Suzuki led the way with a team leading three hits and two RBIs.

Jio, Stephens, and Taylor each had a pair of hits, while Jio, Stephens, and Johnson plated the other three runs.

Coming in as a reliever, Eddie Lee pitched 2.1 innings, giving up one earned run and striking out three batters.

Game Two

In the top of the third, back-to-back doubles by Noah Hata and Kota Suzuki put Hawaii Pacific on the board first once again.

It did not take long before Holy Names had an answer. Before an out was recorded in the bottom half of the third, the Hawks saw five straight batters reach base. The last two batters of the five both hit doubles to give HNU a 4-1 lead. One more base hit in the inning would score a fifth run. In the following frame, Holy Names plated another run to extend their lead to 6-1.

However, the Sharks were not going to go out on a whimper. With two runners on and two outs to their name, HPU closed the gap in the top of the fifth. Daniel Johnson restarted the scoring with a single through the left side, bringing in Hata.

Continuing into the inning, D.J. Stephens ripped a single to the right center gap to score Nicholas Jio. A passed ball then saw Johnson cross the plate, while Ian Wolski found his own single to plate Stephens. Hawaii Pacific now only trailed 6-5 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Mac Leisher came in to pitch for the Sharks for the fifth. Three straight hitters reached on base, allowing the Hawks to score a seventh run. Keeping his composure, Leisher struck out the following three batters to minimize the damage.

Unfortunately for HPU, the comeback came up short as they could not produce another base runner offensively in the final two innings. Game two went the way of HNU by a score of 7-5.

Hata, Wolski, and Stephens had a couple of hits each. Suzuki, Wolski, and Stephens all had an RBI.

The pitching staff for Hawaii Pacific finished the game with five strikeouts.
