Baseball Erupts for Season-High 18 Runs in Victory over William Jessup

LINCOLN, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team played a non-conference matchup against William Jessup University Saturday afternoon at McBean Park.

The Sharks (13-22, 8-15 PacWest) put up a season high 18 runs on the Warriors (15-19-1, 8-11-1 GSAC), taking the non-conference matchup 18-10.

With a new spring in their step, the Hawaii Pacific offense jumped ahead early in the top of the first. Kota Suzuki and Cole Kashimoto found themselves in scoring position with one out on the board. Chase Taylor then singled to left field to bring in Suzuki, before Kashimoto came home on a wild pitch to add another run. Not done yet, a loud crack of the bat saw Ian Wolski's ball fly over the center field fence to give the Sharks a big 4-0 lead.

However, in the bottom of the first, Willam Jessup player Chris Lopez launched his own two-run home run to cut their deficit in half. Moving on to the second, another home run, this time by Nata Van Petten, and a run on a double play, saw the game come to an abrupt 4-4 tie.

Apparently, the two teams decided that this baseball game was actually a firework show. Back-to-back long balls to open the top of the third frame by Kashimoto and Tejean Smith helped Hawaii Pacific reclaim the lead.

But no lead was safe, as the Warriors once again responded in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs to knot the game up at six runs a piece.

The fifth inning was messy for both teams. A multitude of walks and errors allowed the Sharks to score five more, while the Warriors tacked on four more runs. The big hit for HPU in the inning was Wolski, who smoked a double down the left field line to score a couple of runs. By the end of the fifth, Hawaii Pacific held onto a 11-10 lead.

More mayhem struck in the seventh inning in the Sharks' favor. With two outs and a runner on second base, HPU used four hits, a pair of walks, and a pair of hit batters to secure a seven run inning. The big hits in the seventh frame came from Adler Pierson, Suzuki, Wolski, and D.J. Stephens, who combined for six RBIs.

As the game was only seven innings long, Hawaii Pacific came out on top with an 18-10 victory over William Jessup.

It was a big game from Wolski as he finished with three hits and a whopping six RBIs. Overall, nine batters earned an RBI for the Sharks.

For Kashimoto, Wolski, and Smith, they each hit their first home run of the season.

On the mound, Kainoa Holt, Shane Adams, Makana Quia, Erik Peterson, and Travis Johnson combined for three innings. Together, they gave up zero earned runs. The pitching staff for the Sharks finished with seven strikeouts overall.
