Softball Takes Both Games Over Crosstown Rival Chaminade

KANEOHE - The Hawaii Pacific University softball team took two off of crosstown rival Chaminade University Saturday afternoon at Howard A. Okita Field.

The Sharks (19-27, 14-12 PacWest) jump up to third in the conference with three weeks left to play. The Silverswords (19-21, 11-14) have six games left to try and climb into a spot at the PacWest Championships.

Game One
The crosstown rivals held each other scoreless through two innings of play before CUH was able to get on the scoreboard. The first batter was hit-by-pitch and a designed sac bunt play got the runner all the way to third. A sac fly on the next at-bat scored the innings first run. With two outs Chaminade strung three consecutive singles together and took a 2-0 lead.

HPU answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Tiari Hernandez singled to right field to get the rally started. Brandi Leong followed her up with one of her own, and Noel Saunders grounded out but moved the runners over. Kanoe Tanigawa stepped in an delivered a timely hit and scored both runs to knot the score up.

The Sharks found more opportunity in the fifth with a leadoff walk from Hoku Ching. Hernandez found her second hit of the contest with a double to left center to put the Sharks ahead 3-2.

The Silverswords would not go away quietly scrapping across one run in the sixth. With no other activity it was up to the Sharks in the bottom of the seventh to try and make some magic. Hernandez once again with two outs this time drew a walk. Leong followed her lead and drew another walk and put the runner in scoring position. With Saunders at the dish a blooper to left field caught the outfielder in no-mans land and dropped for a hit and brought the runner in to walk it off in game one 4-3 for the Sharks.

Hernandez led the way going 2-for-2 with two walks, an RBI, and scored the game winning run.

Yoshida earned her seventh win of the season. She allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out two along the way.

Game Two
HPU jumped on the Silverswords starting pitcher early with bases loaded no outs. Tanigawa delivered another Two-RBI single for a 2-0 lead after one.

Errors on defense hurt the Sharks with an overthrown ball allowed the first runner to cross the plate. Later in the inning a single to center field was misfielded and allowed runners so advance into scoring position and a two-run double down right field scored them both as CUH regained a 3-2 lead in the second.

In the bottom of the fourth HPU had bases loaded with two out for Leong, where she drove in two runs and put the Sharks back out in front. Tanigawa added to her game total next with another two-run RBI single. Hawaii wasn't done there as Hailey Yoshida got in on the hit party with an RBI single to to left field.

Chaminade threatened in the sixth with bases load and no one out but pitcher Taylor Thompson dotted up the strikezone getting three outs and coming out of the inning unscathed.

Thompson also snagged her seventh win of the year as she allowed two runs on four hits and one strikeout.
