Softball Falls to #1 Seed Concordia 7-1 in PacWest Playoffs

LA MIRADA, Calif. - The 2023 PacWest Conference Softball Championship began Wednesday afternoon with Hawaii Pacific University taking on Concordia University Irvine in the first round at Freedom Field.

CUI entered today's matchup as the #12 ranked team in the NFCA Division II Coaches Poll.

The #4 seeded Sharks (22-31, 17-15 PacWest) were unable to overcome the stellar pitching and hot bats of the #1 seeded Golden Eagles  (43-10, 27-5 PacWest), falling 7-1.

Two-outs was the name of the game for the Concordia offense early on. They used four hits and a walk to score three runs in the first three innings. Then in the fifth, a solo shot from Rylie Rohr, a two run bomb from Shelby Pfeiler, and a couple of more hits gave the Golden Eagles a 7-0 lead.

For Hawaii Pacific, they had their work cut out for them. They were going up against Daniela Alvarez, who had only given up 11 earned runs over 95 innings of work prior to today's matchup. The Sharks found a base runner in a few innings, but were unable to bring any runs across the board.

However, with a new pitcher on the mound for CUI in the sixth, Tiari Hernandez decided she wanted to hit her own home run. She took a pitch and lasered it over the left field fence for her fourth home run of the year. But that would be it, as the Sharks fell 7-1 to the Golden Eagles in round one of the PacWest playoffs.

Hernandez and Savanna Salyer-Kovacs finished the game with two hits each. Meanwhile, Brandi Leong earned her own hit in the first inning of the game.

Gianna Kerschbaum came in as a reliever and only gave up one run over two innings of work to a hard hitting CUI team. She, alongside starting pitcher Taylor Thompson, combined for four strikeouts on the day.

Up Next

It is not over yet for Hawaii Pacific, as this is a double-elimination bracket. They will await the loser of game two between the #3 seed Azusa Pacific University Cougars and the #2 seed Biola University Eagles. The Sharks will then battle one of them tomorrow, May 4, with first pitch set for around 11:00 a.m. HST at Freedom Field.
