The Hawaiʻi Pacific University men's tennis team battled hard but came up short in a 5–2 loss to the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo on Friday at the UH Mānoa Tennis Complex.
HPU (2-2) showed resilience throughout singles play, earning two hard-fought victories to highlight the afternoon.
Adam Vasir delivered one of the Sharks' strongest performances, rallying after dropping the first set to defeat Angel Fonseca 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Seth Newman also impressed, securing a straight-sets win at No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Filippo Di Perna.
Despite the team result, the Sharks demonstrated depth and competitiveness across the lineup.
Rene Gabriel Jung pushed his No. 6 singles match to a decisive third-set tiebreak before falling 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), while
Ethan Terry battled in a tight 6-4, 6-4 loss at No. 2.
In doubles action, HPU's top pair of
Yannick Heitzeberg and Newman were locked at 4-4 before their match was left unfinished. The Vulcans secured the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3.
The Sharks will regroup and heal up as they take a three week break from competition before returning to action in Dallas, Texas, as they take on Ouachita Baptist.
