WHAT IS GOOD ACADEMIC STANDING AT HAWAII PACIFIC UNIVERSITY?
The phrase good academic standing is defined differently by each institution. Hawaii Pacific University defines good academic standing as not being on academic probation or academic suspension. Students are expected to meet the minimum cumulative GPA requirement in order to be in good academic standing. After attempting more than 12 semester credits an undergraduate student not meeting the minimum requirements will be placed on probation. Similarly, any graduate student not meeting the minimum cumulative GPA requirement after attempting 9 credit hours will be placed on academic probation.
The number of credit hours attempted and the corresponding GPA are as follows:

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
Semester Credit Hours Attempted Minimum Cumulative GPA Required
12-60 credits 1.80
Over 60 credits 2.0

GRADUATE STUDENTS
Semester Credit Hours Attempted Minimum Cumulative GPA Required
9 credits and over 3.0

For the most updated GPA requirement for good academic standing, please refer to the HPU Academic Catalogue or contact the Registrar’s Office.

WHAT IS PROGRESS TOWARDS DEGREE?
This phrase refers to a number of academic requirements that student-athletes must satisfy to be academically eligible to participate in intercollegiate competition.
All academic requirements outlined below except the 8-Hour Rule are applicable to mid-year transfers to HPU and student-athletes following their first year of enrollment at Hawaii Pacific University or after the student-athlete has used one season of eligibility in any sport at HPU.

The Eight (8) Hour Rule - is applicable to all student-athletes that have ever been enrolled full time at any collegiate institution. In order to be eligible for intercollegiate competition, student-athletes must satisfactorily complete nine-semester or eight-quarter hours of academic credit the preceding regular academic term in which the student-athlete has been enrolled full time at any collegiate institution.

18-Semester– A student-athlete must earn 18-semester hours of academic credit since the beginning of the previous fall term or since the beginning of the preceding regular two semesters. During the first two years or four semesters of collegiate enrollment, a student-athlete may use credits acceptable towards any of the institution’s degree programs to meet progress towards degree requirements.
By the beginning of the third year or fifth semester of collegiate enrollment, a student-athlete can only use credits acceptable towards the specific degree that the student-athlete has formally designated to meet the progress towards degree requirements.

A student-athlete needs to complete at least 18-semester credit hours of academic credit between Fall through Spring semester. The student athlete shall earn no more than 25 percent of the minimum number of semester hours (24) required for progress toward degree during the summer terms. EXPLANATION: (No more than 6-semester credit hours of academic credit earned during summer terms can be countable toward the 24 semester hours of academic credit that a student-athlete must complete in an academic year!)

GPA Rule – Per HPU Athletics Department policy, a student-athlete is required to have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 prior to the beginning of each academic year (i.e. Fall term) or prior to the championship segment in their sport.

Degree Designation- A student athlete must have declared a specific degree/major with the advising office prior to his/her junior year in college or 5th semester of collegiate enrollment at any institution.

Degree Requirement Credits- All credits earned in your 5th semester of college must meet the graduation requirements for the degree that the student-athlete has designated.

If student athletes have any questions or concerns about eligibility, please contact the Athletics Compliance Office. We are available to assist you with any questions that you may have.
