Hendrik Bode is in his tenth season as the head men’s tennis coach at his alma mater. He’s led the Sharks to an overall record of 149-43 (.776) and to HPU’s first ever men’s tennis national championship with the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championship.
A five-time PacWest Conference Coach of the Year (2013-17), Bode was honored as the 2015 ITA Division II Coach of the Year. He’s been named the ITA’s Division II West Region Coach of the Year four times (2012, 2013, 2015, 2016).
In 2020, a season that came to an abrupt stop in mid-March due to the novel corona virus, the Sharks once again had a team full of promise. A very young team, with a lot of fight and great team chemistry was out to accomplish great things. They had a great run at the inaugural ITA Indoor Championships with a third-place finish and an upset over then No. 3 West Florida. The Sharks finish the season ranked No. 5 in the country and had three players named ITA All-Americans.
The Sharks returned in full force in 2019 winning their sixth PacWest Championship and a Final Four appearance in the NCAA Tournament. They finished the season with a 18-5 record, a final ITA ranking of fourth in the country, one ITA All-American and multiple PacWest Honors.
The Sharks had a tough 2018 season with multiple setbacks in a rebuilding year. For the first time since 2007, the Sharks did not qualify for a birth in the NCAA Sweet 16. They finished the season with a 3-13 record, a fifth-place finish at the PacWest Championships and a few PacWest Honors.
The 2017 season saw the Sharks win their fifth consecutive PacWest Conference Championship and finished the season ranked fourth in the country after falling to eventual champion West Florida in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. Three Sharks received ITA All-America honors and Bode was named PacWest Coach of the Year for the fifth straight season.
The 2016 season marked history for the program, as Bode led the Sharks to the NCAA Division II National Championship in their third straight trip to the championship match. And they did it the hard way. After having their 50-match regular season winning streak snapped late in the season, HPU rebounded by winning its fourth consecutive PacWest Championship. Facing three of the top 10 ranked teams in a brutal draw at the national tournament, the Sharks saved their best for last defeating top-ranked Saint Leo (Fla.) 5-3 to clinch the title. HPU finished the season No. 1 in the final ITA rankings for the first time in school history. Bode was named ITA West Region Coach of the Year for the fourth time, as well as PacWest Coach of the Year for the fourth straight season. A pair of Sharks received ITA All-American honors with Thibaud Berland finishing the season as the No. 1 ranked singles player in the country.
In 2015, Bode led the Sharks to a perfect regular season (19-0) for the second consecutive year. The Sharks made a run to the national title match for the second consecutive year falling just short of the school’s first ever national title in men’s tennis to Barry (Fla.). HPU finished the
season ranked No. 2 in the country for the second year in row with a 24-1 record. Bode swept honors as the ITA National Coach of the Year, West Region Coach of the Year, and for the third straight season the PacWest Coach of the Year. Four of his Sharks ITA All-American honors.
The 2014 season saw Bode direct HPU to a 23-1 record and the program’s first appearance in the championship final since 2003. HPU faced one of the toughest schedules in the country, beating 15 nationally ranked teams and two NCAA Division I foes.
In 2013, he was named PacWest Coach of the Year as HPU won the first PacWest Men’s Championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals for a second straight season. HPU knocked off nine ranked opponents en route to a final ITA ranking of No. 5 in the country that gave Bode his second ITA West Region Coach of the Year.
In his rookie season of 2012, Bode directed HPU to a 15-5 campaign and the NCAA Division II National Quarterfinals. The impressive effort gave him his first ITA West Region Coach of the Year honor.
Bode, originally from Lehrte, Germany, had a stellar career as a member of the HPU tennis team. He was a member of three NCAA National Tournament teams and helped pace the then Sea Warriors to a third place national finish in 2009. Bode finished his last season ranked second in the West Region and was selected as the ITA Senior Male Player of the Year. His highest national rank was No. 5 in the country. He finished his three-year career at HPU with a 39-13 overall singles record, almost exclusively at the No. 1 position. He also posted a 45-15 career doubles record. A scholar as well, Bode was named to the 2009 ITA All-Academic Team.
After his playing days were finished, Bode became a graduate assistant coach at HPU in 2010. He quickly was promoted to assistant coach for the 2011 season.
Bode currently serves as the co-chair of the ITA DII Operating Committee, the National Chair for the DII Ranking Committee, is the Coaches Commission Chair for the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section and serves on the Hawaii Pacific Section USTA Youth Tennis Committee.
Bode graduated from HPU in Management in 2008 and received his master’s in Business Administration in 2010. He currently resides in Hawai'i Kai with his wife HPU women’s tennis coach Lauren Conching and their six-year-old daughter, Lana.
