St. George, UT (10/2/10) – At Hansen Field on the Dixie State College campus, the HPU men's soccer team defeated the Red Storm, 2-1. The Sea Warriors scored twice in the final six minutes of the match to remain undefeated in PacWest play at 5-0. Dixie State falls to 2-3-1 in conference and 2-6-1 overall.
HPU, now at 6-1 overall, trailed by one goal late in the match before Richard Guffens (Leiden, The Netherlands) tied the score with his goal in the 84th minute. Chance Bukoski (Kapaa, HI) then put home the gamewinner less than three minutes later.
The Red Storm opened the scoring in the first half with a goal by Alexander Clayton. After a 30-minute halftime delay due to lightning storms, the two teams resumed play. Guffens was inserted late in the match and scored after he received a centered pass from Bukoski, finishing in the far side netting.
Bukoski scored the gamewinner moments later when he struck a ball from 25 yards out that Dixie keeper Tyler Walters mishandled. The ball skipped off the wet turf and squirted inside the near post.
Kay Flache (Schweinfurt, Germany) recorded three saves in goal for HPU, with Walters posting two saves.
HPU now travels to Phoenix as they take on Grand Canyon University in a pair of PacWest contests. The Sea Warriors and 'Lopes kickoff Monday, October 4, at 5:45 p.m. Mountain Time.
