Men’s Soccer Tops Dominican In Overtime

Kaneohe, HI (10/23/10) – At Atherton Field, the HPU men's soccer team defeated Dominican University, 2-1, in overtime. Kainoa Kahui scored the gamewinner just before the end of the first overtime to help HPU snap a four-game losing streak. HPU improved to 8-6 overall and 7-3 in the PacWest, while Dominican fell to 3-9-3 overall and 3-6-2 in conference.

Pierrick Cassin opened the scoring for the Sea Warriors in the 35th minute. He scored after a scramble in front of the Dominican net to give HPU a 1-0 lead. The Penguins responded with a goal in the second half to even the match. In the 75th minute, David Mendez took a shot outside the HPU penalty area that ricocheted off the cross bar into the goal.

With the match seemingly headed into double overtime, HPU was awarded a throw-in near the Penguin penalty area. A long throw by Isaiah Guth found the head of an onrushing Kahui who scored the sudden victory goal.

Kay Flache recorded four saves for HPU with Dominican goalkeeper Matthew Carlson posting seven saves in the losing effort.

HPU returns to action Wednesday, November 27, versus Chaminade. Start time at Atherton Field is set for 12:30 p.m.
