Hilo, HI (10/30/10) – On the campus of UH-Hilo, the HPU men's soccer team defeated the Vulcans, 3-2, in overtime. John Hellstrand's free kick in overtime was mishandled by the Vulcan defense, as HPU won the match on an own goal. The Sea Warriors improved to 10-6 overall and 9-3 in the PacWest, ensuring themselves of at least a third place conference finish. UH-Hilo dropped to 6-7-2 overall and 5-5-2 in the PacWest.
After a scoreless first half in sloppy conditions, both teams netted two goals in the second half to send the game into overtime. UH-Hilo struck first when Eduardo Ayala scored on a free kick outside the penalty area.
The Sea Warriors responded with two goals to take the lead late in the match. Hellstrand slipped a ball behind the Vulcan back line that Chance Bukoski ran on to and scored past UHH keeper Dane Kaylor. Richard Guffens gave HPU the lead five minutes later when he scored off a loose ball in the penalty box.
Minutes before full time UH-Hilo again capitalized on an HPU foul, this time in the penalty box. Drew Geis scored the penalty kick to send the match into extra time.
Just minutes into the first overtime, the Sea Warriors were awarded the free kick outside the box which led to the gamewinner.
HPU keeper Kay Flache posted nine saves, while Kaylor recorded six saves.
