Hilo, HI (11/7/09) – At UHH Gymnasium, the HPU women's volleyball team fell to UH-Hilo in four games (23-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-19). The Lady Sea Warriors drop to 12-11 overall and 9-5 in the PacWest. UHH improves to 25-1 overall and 15-1 in conference.
Kyra Pelayo led HPU with 12 digs and
Mariana Souza, Kelly Balanay, and
Julia Gruszecka each posted a team-high eight kills. Josimara Pinheiro paced UH-Hilo with 15 kills and 20 digs. HPU distanced themselves late in game one. They broke a 17-17 tie with three straight points and held on for the win.
After dropping game two, the Sea Warriors responded by taking a solid 15-11 lead in game three. But UHH would go on a 9-2 run to take the lead and held on for the win.
In game four, UH-Hilo grabbed an early lead they would not relinquish.
Natasha Bell recorded six kills and six digs for HPU, and
Tricia Yoshimura added seven digs.
HPU next takes on BYU-Hawai'i this Thursday, November 12. Start time at Canon Activities Center is set for 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcasted live on AM 1500 radio.
