Men’s Basketball Drops a Heartbreaker in OT

Honolulu, HI (1/16/11) – For the second time this season, Hawaii Pacific and UH-Hilo needed overtime to determine a winner. Initially, Hilo's Lavell Shipman thought he won the game with a buzzer-beater three-pointer at the end of regulation, but upon a video review, it was ruled a two pointer. That set the stage for overtime, where HPU ultimately fell 100-95. HPU is now 7-8 and 2-2 in conference play Hilo improves to 12-3 and 4-0.

Momentum switched sides often, with the game featured eight ties. HPU trailed early, but grabbed its first lead (9-8) at the 13:14 mark on a three-pointer by Junior Nick Frazier. UHH would respond, taking a 34-28 lead to the half.

The Sea Warriors shot an outstanding 65% from the field and 60% from three in the second half as they battled back. In fact, HPU built a seven point lead with 2:23 left but could not hold it. Junior LaBrent Chappell did most of his damage in the second half, carding a team-high 20 points for the game.

Sophomore Kyle Allen scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds, including all six of HPU's points in the extra period. Senior Jason Jackson also had 19 points and grabbed 7 rebounds while senior Royal Edwards just missed a double-double with 17 points and 9 boards. Junior Nick Frazier also added 10 points.

Justin Smith and Zach Wilde led the Vulcans with 21 points each.

HPU next plays four straight road games, starting January 21st against BYU-H in Laie. Tip time is set for 7:00 p.m. HPU returns home on February 2nd to host BYU-H at the Neil Blaisdell Center, starting at 7:30 p.m. The February 2nd tilt can be seen live on KWHE-TV.
