HPU Outlasts Dixie St. in Double Overtime

Honolulu, HI (February 28, 2011) – Hawai'i Pacific men's basketball played the game of the year, winning 93-88 in double OT on senior night. HPU had four scorers in double figures, led by Nick Frazier who dropped 23. The win for HPU knocked Dixie State out of first place in the PacWest.

With 1:23 left in the second overtime, HPU was down five and Dixie St. had the ball. Frazier jumped in the passing lane, stole the ball, and dunked the ball to cut the lead to three. Consecutive stops and baskets by Kyle Allen and Jason Jackson put HPU up one. HPU sealed the game going 4-4 from the line.

The game was close throughout, but HPU trailed late until Frazier hit a three-pointer to put HPU up two with 1:33 to play. Dixie St. ended up evening the game, and nearly won it when McKay Massey hit a shot from the opposite three-point line, after a video review the shot was waved off. In the first overtime, HPU led the entire way. After LaBrent Chappell put HPU up three on a pair of free throws, Tom Whitehead hit a three for Dixie St. to force a second overtime.

HPU shot 33-69 (48%) from the field and 7-14 (50%) from three-point range. Frazier went 5-7 from long range. The win moves HPU to 11-16 overall, and 6-9 in conference play.

Chappell scored 16 points, had four assists, and hit four key foul shots. Allen flirted with a triple-double scoring 15 points, dishing out 10 assists, and grabbing seven rebounds. Jackson also had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, his sixth of the season.

Whitehead led Dixie St. with 23 points, DSC is now 18-6, 11-3.

HPU faces Grand Canyon on Saturday at McCabe Gym at 2:30 P.M. It is the final regular season game of the year.
