Volleyball Closes Season with Sweep

Honolulu, HI (November 15, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific volleyball team (17-8, 10-6) wrapped up the 2012 regular season campaign with a 3-0 sweep of Chaminade (7-17, 4-11) at McCabe Gym (25-23, 25-17, 25-22). The Sea Warriors ended the season on a roll, winning 10 of 11 matches.

HPU came out sluggish and trailed early in the first set. The 'Swords, playing on their Senior Night, lead 16-15 in the middle of set one. HPU would then go on a 4-0 run, featuring two kills from Amanda Moriarty, to lead 19-16. Chaminade would hang in and eventually fight off three set points before HPU closed the door, 25-23.

Set two was tied at three before HPU ripped off a 6-0 run to lead 9-3, the HPU spree was fueled by two kills from Sanoe Recca.  From there HPU never trailed by less than two, enjoying a cushion for most of the set.

The third set saw Chaminade lead for much of it. Things looked bleak for the green and blue, trailing 15-9. HPU then took seven of the next nine points to get to within one at 17-16. The turning point came at 20-19 when after a long rally HPU tied the set on a hitting error on Chaminade. Fittingly, Recca ended the match, and maybe her career, with back-to-back kills.

“Tonight our team showed how much flexibility we have as a group to move people in and out of different positions,” said head coach Daryl Kapis.

Kasey Thompson led HPU with nine kills; Recca had eight as Moriarty had seven.  Moriarty led the team in digs with 13 as libero Chelsey Buyuan had 12. Senior Pihanakealoha Kea passed out 21 assists in maybe her last match.

HPU out hit Chaminade .193 to .145 and won the blocking battle 8-4. Six block assists came from Christina Furrer.

Kapis hopes the season isn't over, but would call it a success either way. “Finishing the season 17-8 with such a young team is a huge accomplishment for this program. It shows how bright the future is.”

HPU will await the NCAA selection on Sunday to see if they have qualified for the NCAA West Regional.
