Men’s Soccer Wins in Double OT

Kaneohe, HI (November 1, 2012) - Daniel Haehre came off the bench to score two goals as the Hawai'i Pacific (8-6-2, 7-3-3) men's soccer team defeated Academy of Art (4-12-1, 4-6-1) in double overtime by the score of 2-1. Mael Lefebvre made two saves in goal for the Sea Warriors in the come-from-behind effort.

The Sea Warriors dominated possession for much of the match, holding a 23-6 advantage in shots over the Urban Knights. It would be the Urban Knights who would strike first however, capitalizing on a miscommunication between defender Rene Wagner and Lefebvre who slipped attempting to make the clear. With Lefebvre on the ground, Urban Knight forward Leonardo Bartelle hit the open net giving Art U the 1-0 lead in the 31st minute. The Sea Warriors answered just nine minutes later when Alejandro Porras found Haehre who tucked the ball just inside the left post. The half would end with the score tied at one.

The Sea Warriors continued their domination of the shot column in the second half getting off 11 shots compared to the Urban Knights' two. Art keeper Ian Sutherland would keep his side in it however, making five saves in the second half, several of them in spectacular fashion. The Sea Warriors also had several near misses, including one hit post by Kanoa Nartatez in the 69th minute. Despite controlling the action the Sea Warriors would find themselves in their second overtime match in five days.

The first overtime period would play much like regulation as the Sea Warriors controlled play but failed to find the back of the net. HPU ended the drama just two minutes in to the second overtime when Haehre picked up a loose ball that was mishandled by Sutherland and deposited it in the back of the net for the golden goal.

The win was bittersweet for the Sea Warriors as senior captain Kainoa Kahui picked up his fifth caution of the season in the 99th minute, forcing him to sit out the next game, which is the final game of the season.

The Sea Warriors return to the pitch for Senior Day on November 3rd against Holy Names University at Atherton Field; game time is scheduled for 12:30 PM.
