Kaneohe, HI (November 3, 2012)- Senior
Yev Shkelev scored his first collegiate goal and
Guillem Vinas Marin scored with four seconds left in double overtime as the Hawai'i Pacific (9-6-3, 8-3-3) men's soccer team won in dramatic fashion against Holy Names University (7-10-1, 4-10) by the score of 3-2.
Shkelev would get the Sea Warriors on the board first in the 36th minute beating the Hawks keeper on a pass from
Jimmy Baggett from just inside the 18. The lone goal would stand at halftime as the Sea Warriors held a 6-2 advantage in shots at the break.
The second half would turn in to an exciting back and forth affair. HNU would get on the board in the 52nd minute after a penalty kick was awarded after a handball in the box. Hawks forward Rasmus Larsson would convert the PK tying the score at one goal apiece. The Sea Warriors would answer just 10 minutes later when senior
Heimana Chene scored on a header from Marin making the score 2-1. The match would head to overtime however; as Larsson again scored on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute knotting the score at two goals apiece.
The Sea Warriors dominated play in the overtimes, out-shooting the Hawks 4-1, but the match appeared to be on its way to a draw until Larsson was whistled for a yellow card with just six seconds to play. Marin lined up for the indirect kick from roughly 25 yards out. Marin sent the ball to the far post, the Hawks keeper had it go off his hands and into the net when he tried to intercept it giving HPU the 3-2 win with just four seconds remaining on the clock. Marin, who has been gutting out a knee injury for the past few games, was mobbed by his teammates on the field as he finished the match with a goal and an assist.
After the match head coach
Chris Fisher commented on his team's improbable last second win on Senior Day, “What an ending to the season! I guess our seniors wanted to extend their careers to the last second. What should have been taken care of in regulation, turned out to be a lot of fun.”
The match concludes the season for the men's squad.
