Box Score Honolulu, HI (February 11, 2012) – The Hawai'i Pacific men's basketball team (8-12, 3-9) grinded out a 64-52 win over Dominican University (7-16, 6-6) on Saturday night at McKinley High School. Hot shooting and a strong second half propelled HPU to victory.
The game was very tight for most of the first half, in fact, the game featured three ties. The last tie was at 20-20, with 3:39 left to play. HPU then made its move, going on a 9-0 run, capped by a three-pointer by
LaBrent Chappell. That proved to be the turning point as HPU would not trail again. HPU extend its lead to as many as 17, with Dominican not getting any closer than five points in the second half.
Three Sea Warriors recorded double-figure scoring nights led by
Fran Urli's 14. Guards Chappell and
Nick Frazier posted 13 and 10 points respectively. Frazier also led HPU in assists with five as
Kyle Allen had a team-high seven rebounds. Marco Cukic contributed eight points off the bench.
HPU shot 67% in the second half, leading to an overall percentage of 56% (23-41). The HPU defense held Dominican to 21-56 (38%) from the field. Remarkably, Dominican shot just 33% (8-24) from the foul line. HPU controlled the glass to the tune of a 35-28 advantage.
HPU will next face Notre Dame de Namur on Senior Night on Friday at McKinley High School at 7 PM. HPU will honor seniors Frazier, Chappell,
Glenn Miller and
Dustin Simcox.
