Men’s Soccer Stays Perfect in the PacWest

Laie, HI, (September 20, 2012) - The Hawai'i Pacific (2-3, 2-0) men's soccer kept its momentum going in PacWest play defeating BYU-Hawaii (1-1-1, 0-1-1) by the score of 3-1 on the North Shore. Daniel Haehre scored a goal in his third consecutive game for the Sea Warriors and Mael Lefebrve made three saves in the victory.

Heimana Chene kicked off the scoring for HPU on a breakaway in the 23rd minute, scoring off a rebound after Seasiders keeper Tyler Smedley made the initial stop. In the 33rd minute, Daniel Haerhre scored his third goal in as many games after a feed from Keenan Ho, pushing the HPU lead to 2-0. Things would get interesting just before the half as Lefebreve was unable to stop a pass back from scoring into his own net after a communication mix-up with his defense. The Sea Warriors would go to the break up 2-1 and enjoying a 12-2 advantage in shots, including a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal.

HPU would again hold the shot advantage in the second period out-shooting the Seasiders 12-7. The score remained 2-1 throughout most of the second period until Alejandro Porras scored on a breakaway in the 90th minute striking the ball off the crossbar and bouncing in. The goal is the eighth and ninth points for Porras over the last three matches.

After the game Head Coach Chris Fisher was already looking ahead at the difficult PacWest schedule, “We are always happy to get a win, but we still have not yet reached our full potential. We dealt with a few injuries today and came out a little sluggish in the second half and we are going to have to step it up and play better if we want to be successful in a conference as difficult as the PacWest.”Although early in the season, the win leaves HPU as one of only three undefeated schools left in conference play.

The Sea Warriors continue PacWest play on Saturday, September 22nd against Chaminade at Atherton Field. Game time is 12:30 PM.
